How much Huddersfield Town nearly signed Chelsea legend John Terry for
Even more thrilling than completed transactions are transfer near-misses, since some of the biggest names in
football have previously been associated with current EFL clubs.
In previous years, players like Didier Drogba, Harry Kane, and Robert Lewandowski have all nearly joined teams like
Southampton, Burnley, and Blackburn Rovers, respectively, before making an impact on the game.
Before becoming one of the greatest centre backs to have ever played in the top flight, Chelsea icon John Terry nearly
moved to West Yorkshire at the beginning of his career. Huddersfield Town has also had its own chance to win the
championship.

Football League World has examined the amount the Terriers almost paid for the services of the five-time Premier
League champion and Champions League champion during Steve Bruce’s tenure as manager.
Huddersfield nearly struck a bargain deal with Chelsea for Terry
the end of the 1999–00 season, when he made six appearances for the Reds in the second division.
Despite his impressive performance, Bruce pursued a deal with Chelsea for the center-back’s services because it was
unclear if he would be able to advance to the first team.
The current Blackpool manager, in his second managerial position, revealed to The Sun how close he was to signing
Terry while he was in charge of Huddersfield.
“When I was managing Huddersfield, I was so close to signing John Terry,” he said. “I believed it would happen—
quite definitely, in fact—for £750,000.
However, Chelsea manager Gianluca Vialli later had second thoughts. They chose to keep John after he performed
admirably during his five or six games on loan at Nottingham Forest.
Bruce went on: “I honestly believed I was getting him at the beginning of the transaction, but it didn’t work out.
Without a loan, it would have been a straight deal.
“Back then, JT was just a child. Wouldn’t the path of history have been altered? With five Premier League titles, five
FA Cups, a Champions League, and almost 80 England caps, he is one of the most successful captains in history. He
would have been at Huddersfield Town instead.
Bruce eventually secured the services of Terry
Although he was unable to sign Terry at Huddersfield, he eventually connected with the defender while managing
Championship team Aston Villa.
Although the great centre-back only played for the Villans for a single season, his experience proved invaluable as his
team advanced to the play-off final before losing to Fulham.
