How much Norwich City will save on wages as Onel Hernandez, Angus Gunn and Sorensen depart

Last week, after their slim chances of making the playoffs were dashed, Norwich made the audacious decision to fire head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup after less than 11 months in command. The decision caused a rift among the supporters of Carrow Road.

After earning a respectable point in his debut game, a 0-0 draw at Middlesbrough on Saturday, Jack Wilshere, who is presently serving as interim manager of the Canaries, will have another opportunity to make an impression this weekend when his team hosts Cardiff City.

Wilshere acknowledged last week that he feels he is “ready to be a head coach at this level and make an impact,” without going so far as to confirm that he is eager to get the permanent position. However, it appears that a decision regarding the managerial situation has not yet been made, as it has been reported that Norwich is considering a surprise move for Watford manager Tom Cleverley.

Goalie Angus Gunn, midfielder Jacob Sorensen, and winger Onel Hernandez will all leave the Canaries at the end of their contracts this summer, the team confirmed Monday ahead of the season’s final game, despite not having a manager in place.

In the summer of 2021, Gunn rejoined Norwich for a third stint after leaving Southampton, and he had dominated the team’s goalkeeping for the majority of the previous three seasons.

Although Gunn’s impending departure has taken some fans by surprise due to his close ties to the Canaries, rumors about the 29-year-old’s future had intensified in recent weeks due to Leeds United’s alleged interest.

In the summer of 2020, Sorensen moved to Norwich from Danish team Esbjerg fB, and during his first season at Carrow Road, he was a member of the team that won the Championship title under Daniel Farke.

Over the last five years, the midfielder has played in 109 games for the Canaries, scoring four goals and dishing out three assists. However, he has recently suffered from injuries and has occasionally been criticized for his performances.

Hernandez, who joined Norwich from German team Eintracht Braunschweig in January 2018, has been with the team the longest of the three outgoing players. During his tenure, Hernandez has twice been promoted to the Premier League.

Onel Hernandez’s stats for Norwich City (as per Transfermarkt)
Appearances 209
Goals 15
Assists 26
Stats correct as of 29th April 2025

Hernandez has, however, also had two loan stints away from the team, at Middlesbrough and Birmingham City. Earlier this month, former head coach Thorup excluded Hernandez from the squad for the games against Sunderland and Burnley because of his social media activities.

We examined how much the club will save in salary when Gunn, Sorensen, and Hernandez leave in the summer as they get ready to make their last appearances in Canaries uniforms this weekend.
