How Norwich City could look if Russell Martin is appointed – 4 changes are likely

Many Canaries supporters on social media are urging the team to make a move for former Norwich captain and defender Russell Martin, who has been tipped to succeed Thorup at Carrow Road.

Martin is known for his almost extreme, bordering on ridiculous style of football, and his reputation as a coach needs to be repaired after leading Saints to promotion via the play-offs last season and his disastrous few months as Southampton’s manager in the Premier League.

As supporters look to support a scheme that can bring them Premier League football once more, a reunion in Norfolk may be planned for this summer, which would result in some modifications at Carrow Road.

As previously said, Russell Martin is renowned for his extreme and complex football style, which he has used throughout his management career with Southampton, Swansea City, and Milton Keynes Dons.

His players’ dominance of the league’s passing statistics, which he enforces, might leave them vulnerable defensively. This was the case even when Saints were promoted a few years ago, as they gave up 63 goals in 46 games.

The Canaries have given up 66 goals in 44 Championship games this season, and only four sides have given up more, so there are some parallels between Martin and Thorup in terms of defensive slip.

2023/24 Championship best attacking records
Team Goals scored
Ipswich Town 92
Leicester City 89
Southampton 87
Leeds United 81
Norwich City 79

Despite all of its shortcomings, Martin’s football style does seem to have a more distinct and consistent identity than Thorup’s, possibly due to his commitment to a particular system—the back three.

Martin is committed to a back three, regardless of whether he has the players available for it or even in the squad. Only in dire situations has that changed, like the first half of the 2023–24 season at St. Mary’s on occasion.
