Tony Pulis completed a £2.25 million move for Abdoulaye Faye almost 17 years ago, the night before Stoke City’s Premier League debut.
In the better part of ten years at the club, it would turn out to be one of his most significant. Fortunately, they were able to pass Everton, West Brom, Blackburn Rovers, and Wigan to reach the front of the queue.
After just a year at Newcastle, Faye made 24 appearances, including a goalless draw against Stoke in the FA Cup.
“Anyone who saw him that day will understand why he has drawn us,” Pulis remarked. He’s a big boy with a tonne of Premier League experience in a crucial part of the pitch. It has been helpful in attempting to get him here because he wants to return to the North West.
Bolton, who had let him to join his former manager Sam Allardyce for £2 million in 2007, prevented Stoke from obtaining a work visa in time for him to play on opening day. The tone for the upcoming months was established when it did land in time for the first home game against Aston Villa.
He was simply remarkable.
