After Ruben Selles ruled himself out of leading Cardiff City’s hopes to return to the Championship next season, the team is still searching for their ninth manager in four years.
Cardiff was demoted from the Championship in the 2024–25 season after finishing in last place, while Selles had a lackluster season himself, being sacked by Hull City shortly after the season ended despite just accepting the position in December of the previous year.
Hull just narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of the season, finishing in 21st position in the final Championship standings.
Selles wants to stay in the Championship

Selles declined the Cardiff position because he wants to remain in the Championship for the upcoming season, according to BBC reporting.
It would seem that Selles would prefer to wait for one of the managerial openings at other teams in the division rather than leaving a division to take the Cardiff position.
Cardiff has a list of six possible new managers, according to the BBC story, and interviews have already been conducted with former Oxford United manager Des Buckingham and former Bolton Wanderers manager Ian Evatt.
Selles is used to working in a difficult environment

Given that Selles gave up two divisions after being fired by Southampton two years ago to take the then-open managerial post at Reading, this may all be viewed as rather surprising.
Before departing to accept the position at Hull in May, Selles spent a year and a half at The Select Car Leasing Stadium.
Cardiff itself is not especially well-represented by any of this.
It’s hard to say that Selles are terrified of working under challenging conditions. Reading lost a total of six points on three separate occasions during the 2023–2024 season.
The EFL docked Reading one point on August 16, 2023, for three instances in the 2022–2023 season alone of not paying players on schedule and in full.
On September 13th, a further three points were deducted for not making the timely salary deposit. Due to late payments to HMRC, an additional 2-point reduction was levied on February 27. Selles led his squad to 17th place in League One in spite of this.
When Selles went for Hull, Reading was enjoying even more success in the 2024–2025 season. They finished in seventh position in the table, just missing out on the League One play-off spots at the time of his departure.
Working with the now-former Reading owner Dai Yongge may have taught the former Hull boss a valuable lesson. A manager with prior experience is unlikely to be interested in returning to a club with a tumultuous backstage atmosphere.
Supporters of Cardiff could think that the manager who tolerated Dai Yongge for a year and a half won’t consider joining their team, which speaks something about the Bluebirds’ current situation.
