Huddersfield Town keen to appoint 50-year-old Northern Irish manager as QPR & Cardiff City also circle
Stephen Robinson, the manager of St Mirren, is apparently interested in becoming the new manager of Huddersfield
Town.
After being relegated from the Championship, the Terriers had a poor debut season in League One, where many had
anticipated that they would contend for an instant promotion.
That did not turn out to be the case, though, as owner Kevin Nagle fired manager Michael Duff in March. Jonathan
Worthington, the team’s interim manager, was unable to stop the decline, and they lost six straight games to
conclude the season.
The hunt has begun for Duff’s long-term replacement after he finished in tenth place.
After a protracted period without a permanent manager, Alan Nixon claims that the Terriers have made Robinson, a
Northern Irishman, their top target and are optimistic that a deal can be reached.
But it’s also thought that Championship team QPR and League One newcomers Cardiff City are monitoring
Robinson’s condition.
Rovinson, 50, has performed admirably with the Saints since assuming leadership in 2022. Last season, he secured
European football for the team for the first time since 1987 and guided the Paisley team to three consecutive top-six
finishes.
Although it is thought that St. Mirren is ready to hear offers for Robinson’s services, they have extra assurance
because they were able to sign him to a new deal not long ago.
Robinson’s popularity south of the border is hardly surprising given his heroics in the dugout for St Mirren over the
past few years.
Robinson is familiar with English football from his long playing career in England, which included stints with
Bournemouth, Luton, Preston, and Tottenham.
Additionally, he has previous EFL managerial experience, having briefly managed Oldham Athletic and Morecambe.
Even though his fresh contract will have given St Mirren new hope, all three of the EFL’s interested parties could
probably outbid him for his present salary, which would make a move to England alluring.
| Stephen Robinson managerial record (as per Transfermarkt) | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Club | Games | W | D | L | Win % |
| St Mirren | 146 | 52 | 28 | 66 | 35.61% |
| Morecambe | 41 | 10 | 9 | 22 | 24.39% |
| Motherwell | 169 | 72 | 27 | 70 | 42.6% |
| Oldham Athletic | 33 | 8 | 10 | 15 | 24.24% |
Even though all of them are enormous teams with a tonne of room to grow, Huddersfield might be the most alluring
offer right now.
Despite their lacklustre League One campaign, the Terriers have a solid roster and should only require slight
personnel changes to contend for promotion the next year.
In contrast, Cardiff will probably require a significant overhaul as they prepare for their first third-tier campaign
since 2003.
In the meantime, QPR has recently been largely inert in the Championship, and the departure of manager Marti
Cifuentes may raise questions regarding hiring practices.
Huddersfield obviously has a sizable budget for the third division, as evidenced by the January transfer window
when they acquired players like Dion Charles and Joe Taylor. As a result, the North Irishman would undoubtedly
have enough of support from the club’s leadership to shape the team in his image.
Given that the 50-year-old is rumoured to have a set sum connected to him as part of his most recent contract with
St. Mirren, Nixon indicates that that budget might be required to entice Robinson away from his current club.
