Huddersfield Town promotion hero joins Championship new boys after Leicester City departure

Danny Ward helped Huddersfield Town win promotion to the Premier League in 2017

Danny Ward, a former Huddersfield Town loanee, has rejoined Wrexham on a free transfer after leaving Leicester City. The 32-year-old goalkeeper spent a season on loan with Town from Liverpool, appearing 46 times during the 2016/17 promotion season. The goalkeeper was instrumental in the Terriers’ penalty shootout victories over Sheffield Wednesday and Reading in the play-offs, which secured their spot in the Premier League.

Ward joined the Foxes in 2018, where he appeared 52 times in all competitions at the King Power Stadium. The goalkeeper left the recently relegated Championship club this summer when his contract expired.

The Welsh international has now returned to the club where he began his career, having joined Liverpool from Wrexham in 2012 before making a first-team debut for his hometown club. Ward has signed a two-year contract with the Red Dragons, becoming the Welsh club’s second acquisition since being promoted to the Championship.

Ward told his new club’s website after completing his return: “It’s an exciting time and an amazing feeling to be back at the club.” “I’m forever grateful for the opportunity that the club gave me at an early age and I hope I can repay that.”

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson added: “We are happy to welcome Danny back to Wrexham. He’s a very experienced goalkeeper who will be an excellent addition to the team.”
