Huddersfield Town Swoop for Millwall’s Murray Wallace

Huddersfield Town have completed the signing of experienced defender Murray Wallace on a free transfer, marking a return to West Yorkshire for the Scottish centre-back after seven years away.

Wallace, 31, rejoins the Terriers after leaving Millwall at the end of his contract this summer. His return is a nostalgic one for Huddersfield fans who will remember the defender’s contribution during his initial stint with the club between 2012 and 2016, which included helping the side earn promotion to the Championship via the play-offs.

The left-sided defender brings vast experience and leadership to a Huddersfield side aiming to stabilise following recent turbulence in the Championship. He becomes the second significant addition of the week after Chelsea midfielder Alex Matos joined on loan, as the club continues to reshape its squad under head coach Michael Duff.

Speaking after sealing the deal, Wallace expressed his delight at returning to the John Smith’s Stadium. “It feels great to be back,” he said. “Huddersfield is a special club for me – it’s where I got my first real taste of English football. I’ve learned a lot over the years and I’m looking forward to helping the team push on this season.”

Wallace first rose through the ranks at Scottish club Falkirk, where his consistent performances earned him a move to Huddersfield Town in January 2012. Though he initially remained on loan at Falkirk until the summer, Wallace eventually made his mark in West Yorkshire, going on to feature regularly when fit.

Unfortunately, injuries hampered his ability to fully establish himself during his first spell at the club. Seeking more consistent minutes, he made the switch to Scunthorpe United in 2016. It proved to be a key turning point in his career, as his commanding displays saw him named Scunthorpe’s Player of the Season in 2016–17.

In 2018, Wallace stepped up to join Millwall and quickly became a fan favourite at The Den. Over the next six seasons, he amassed over 200 appearances, earning plaudits for his tough tackling, aerial dominance, and versatility – having featured both at centre-back and full-back.

Huddersfield’s sporting director, Mark Cartwright, praised the move, calling Wallace “a player of real pedigree and character.” He added: “Murray knows the club, knows the Championship, and brings a winning mentality. His experience will be invaluable to our younger players.”

Wallace’s arrival comes at a time when Huddersfield are looking to rebuild their defensive line following the departures of several key players at the end of last season. His ability to operate across the backline provides Duff with much-needed depth and flexibility.

Fans will be eagerly anticipating Wallace’s second debut in Huddersfield colours, with pre-season preparations now underway. If he can replicate the consistency and commitment that defined his time at Millwall, the Terriers may have pulled off one of the smartest pieces of business in this summer’s window.

With further additions expected in the coming weeks, it’s clear that Huddersfield are laying the foundations for a more competitive campaign – and Murray Wallace looks set to play a central role.
