Due to free breakfasts, Hull KR‘s poor defensive record is hurting the club’s leadership, but the Robins are getting closer to setting yet another Super League record thanks to those shutouts.
After 16 rounds, Rovers have the top defence in the league by a wide margin. They have given up 132 points, and the club closest to them is St Helens, with 192 points.
But Rovers‘ defence is so strong that they are on course to surpass all previous defensive teams in Super League history by a significant margin.
The number of points given up per game is the best way to determine whose defence is the “best” in Super League history because the season’s duration has altered multiple times.
The 1998 Wigan Warriors team now holds that record, giving up an average of 9.65 points per game during a season in which they won the Grand Final.
Having let up an average of 8.25 points so far this season, Willie Peters’ team is improving on that after 16 games.
They will cut a significant portion of the record set more than 25 years ago if they continue. Rovers can shatter the record even if they give up 260 points over the season.
The Robins are in a strong position to shatter that record and take home a little piece of Super League history because they have only given up 12 points or more in two of their last nine games.
