The former Argentina international went on to say, “Over time, I realised how important that goal was, but I find it difficult to hear people talk about it because I think, ‘Che, there are others on the team.'”
“Look, if Mario Balotelli does not make the pass. It is the most important goal in my career, as well as for the city. I am aware of this. It was Kun Agüero, so OK: I’m happy and proud that I scored it, and it will be remembered forever in the club’s history. “But it was everyone.”
Manchester City ultimately faced significant challenges in securing a direct replacement for Aguero immediately following his free transfer to FC Barcelona in the summer of 2021, but they eventually found the ideal replacement in terms of goalscoring prowess a year later.
Txiki Begiristain and colleagues at the Etihad Stadium offices scoured the market for options in the summer of 2021, hoping to sign then-Tottenham striker Harry Kane, while a sensational move for Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus was also considered.
Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund was eventually brought in to take on the task of replacing Manchester City’s greatest-ever striker, and in his first season at the club, the Norwegian broke numerous records and led the team to a historic Treble.
