‘I go to Chesterfield more than Sheffield now’ Shoppers praise Chesterfield’s historic market.
Sheffield residents have praised Chesterfield’s historic market after the first phase of the multi-million-pound renovation was finished, with some stating that they prefer to shop in town rather than the city.
Posting on public forums According to Alex Webster, Chesterfield’s market region has recently seen an uplift, which he considers positive. Cheap or free local parking, clean and roomy, with a large number of local businesses involved.
“To my knowledge, Sheffield does not have a nice outdoor market. Or does it? I know there is an indoor one on the moor, but I am hesitant to use it. It appears to be dusty, gloomy, and cold, with poor hygiene in some areas.
Kate Jones stated, “I now visit Chesterfield more than Sheffield and enjoy both their market and the town itself. It’s so much better and more contained. However, it lacks a meat/fish market, with only a few butchers, therefore Sheffield has an advantage there. It also boasts a much larger number of pubs in the town core than Sheffield. Although parking appears to be less expensive than in Sheffield, I prefer to take the bus. X17 is the quickest, but only if the stops are close to where you need them; there are also 43, 44, and 50 options. And the fact that you can travel to Chesterfield and then take the X17 to Matlock, Matlock Farm, and Matlock Bath.”

Matthew Uttley added, “I attended college in Chessy in the 1990s and used to walk my girlfriend home to Chatsworth Road. I used to love the flea market, which was thriving at the time, as were the food stalls and the giant shirehorse. Happy days! The new Sheffield moor market is fine, and I’m not sure where the dark and unsanitary atmosphere comes from.”
Ian Hardy observed: “Chesterfield Market Place looks great but where is the free parking.”
Jo Aykroyd concurs: “The cost of parkings quite good in Chesterfield compared to other towns.”
Justin Zod stated: “We do have a great market in Chesterfield; it reminds me of the outdoor markers that used to be outside of Shief Market. Thursday market day is excellent.”
The first phase of Chesterfield Market’s multimillion-pound regeneration was completed in March.
Phase one concentrated on the upper half of the Market Place, with cobbles re-laid and some sections of new paving to make the area more accessible.
Work on a new market stall layout has also begun, with new timber stalls providing more cover for traders and shoppers, as well as colourful new canopies.
Sam Dent answered the question: “Alex Webster do you think Chesterfield is better than Sheffield?”
Alex Webster responded: “Sam Dent.” I never said one was better than the other (markets). I just said they appear to have a well-organised outdoor market for local businesses, and given the size of our city and its potential as a growing city, why don’t we have something similar in the works? According to the comments on this post, many people travel outside of our city centre to attend outdoor markets in neighbouring communities. Our council should consider keeping our residents shopping in the city.”
