I know why Mathias Kvistgaarden wanted to join Norwich City and fans must surely be wary.

Norwich City may have just landed one of the signings of the summer in Mathias Kvistgaarden, and a Danish football expert has explained to us why the young striker chose the Canaries.

Kvistgaarden was expected to cost Norwich over £12 million, but because to a little-known release clause in his Brondby contract, the Canaries were able to sign him for £6.9 million.

The move has been hailed as a masterstroke for Norwich City, with the highly regarded forward entering with high expectations for the new season.

It’s almost too good to be true in many aspects, so why did Kvistgaarden choose to relocate to Carrow Road in the first place? EFL Analysis sought the advice of a Danish football expert to go deeper into the subject.

Danish football expert reveals Mathias Kvistgaarden motivations amid Norwich City move.

We asked Toke Theilade, Vilfort Park’s Editor-in-Chief, why Kvistgaarden chose Norwich over Lens and Celtic, both of which might offer European football.

Theilade stated, “Playing time was very essential for him, and evidently Lens were not willing to promise that he would be their main striker. Norwich, on the other hand, persuaded him that he could get plenty of playing time and made him feel wanted.

“The fact that he is reunited with his former Brondby teammates and friends, Anis Slimane and Oscar Schwartau, is obviously beneficial to him as well. Also, English football is wildly popular in Denmark so the opportunity to one day play in the Premier League was very attractive.”

Regarding Kvistgaarden’s objectives and interests, it appears that Norwich should expect a player who is eager to show himself this season.

But there’s a catch: Kvistgaarden wants to get to the Premier League as quickly as possible. Theilade added: “The most important thing is that he plays a lot and performs well. The Championship is unlikely to prevent him from making the Danish national squad in the near future, but it is also not an advantage.

Ligue 1 would have performed better in this aspect. “But, if he can make it to the Premier League and play frequently, as he wants, he will have a clear path to the national squad. It would be a childhood dream coming true of course.

“I think he also acknowledges that Norwich is a big club and that the Championship is a good place to showcase his abilities for Premier League teams.” According to reports, if Norwich do not earn promotion in 2025/26, their new signing will likely go on to larger and better things very swiftly.

How Brondby really feel about Mathias Kvistgaarden exit

Norwich fans may be ecstatic with the Kvistgaarden signing, but Brondby fans are devastated to lose the 23-year-old, especially at the lower price quoted. In that regard, Theilade added:

“It is supposedly £6.9 million, which is a hugely disappointing amount for Brondby, but he had a release clause in his contract, which is a huge advantage for Norwich of course. “Brondby wanted roughly £11.5 million in January, so Norwich are getting him at a significant discount here.

Brondby fans are disappointed with the fee because they expected Kvistgaarden to be the largest ever sale.” At the same time as Brondby missed out on a record sale, Norwich are about to make one of their biggest sales ever with Borja Sainz’s upcoming exit.

The £14.2 million fee for Sainz will cover the cost of Kvistgaarden, leaving Norwich with plenty of money to continue their remarkable summer transfer business ahead of the new season.
