Sussex man reunites with life-savers after near-death experience

Antony Linward visited the South East Coast Ambulance Service to reunite with paramedics.

A father from East Sussex who collapsed while bleeding profusely from an abdominal aortic aneurysm has been reunited with the doctors who saved his life.

Antony Linward, 68, was at home with his wife in Crowborough in the early hours of November 11, 2024, when he began vomiting and lost consciousness.

When emergency services arrived at their home, Mr Linward was suffering from multiple organ failure while paramedics worked to stabilise him.

Five months later, after 52 days in the hospital, Mr Linward said, “I truly cannot thank them enough for assisting me when disaster struck.” I doubt I would be here today without them.”

“I remember it like yesterday.”

After receiving a 999 call, six clinicians from the South East Coast Ambulance Service (Secamb), the Air Ambulance Charity, and Kent, Surrey, Sussex, and Kent Fire and Rescue arrived at the Linwards’ home.

Mr Linward met the Secamb personnel who assisted in saving his life at the service’s Paddock Wood Make Ready Centre.

Cathleen Carter, who was in charge of dispatching and coordinating medical aid, said she remembered Mr Linward’s collapse “like it was yesterday”.

“I’m so glad I have been able to meet Antony to see the impact that my role has on our patients,” she told me.

Libby Pillet, one of the paramedics who assisted Mr Linward, stated, “It was a pleasure to reunite with Antony after such a traumatic time and to see him doing so well.”
