Stoke City loanee Niall Ennis is still wanted back by Blackpool this summer amid new links to Wigan Athletic, their boss Steve Bruce has said.
Stoke City have a decision to make regarding the striker’s future at the end of the season. His contract with SCFC expires in June 2026.
Ennis, 25, has been linked with a move to Wigan Athletic, according to a report by Football League World. The Latics will be in the hunt for some new signings under new manager Ryan Lowe.
In this latest update, Bruce has said, as per a report by Blackpool Gazette: “The move had done him the world of good and put him back in the spotlight, and he’s scored a few goals for us. I’d like to keep him if I could, but we’ll see what happens.
“We’ve got to be mindful of the fact that he belongs to Stoke, so if there’s a deal to be done, let’s see what we can do. I think he’s just enjoying it here, but in the next week or so I’ll have a sit down with him to see what his thoughts are, but Stoke are the ones we’ve got to get back first.”
Stoke City loan latest regarding Niall Ennis
Stoke City will need to weigh up what to do next with Ennis when he returns from Blackpool. SCFC risk losing him for free next year if they don’t sell him in the next window or in January.
His switch to Blackpool has worked out well for him and has put him in the shop window. He has scored six goals in 14 games and it is no surprise that they want to snap him up on a permanent basis.
The Tangerines signed him on a temporary basis back in January following Kyle Joseph’s exit to Hull City. He was given the green light to leave the Potters to get some more game time.
Ennis rose up through the ranks at Wolves and had loan spells at Shrewsbury Town, Doncaster Rovers and Burton Albion to get experience. He then joined Plymouth Argyle in 2020.
What next for Niall Ennis at Stoke City?
Wigan Athletic’s head coach Lowe worked with Ennis at Plymouth Argyle. He was a key player during his time at Home Park and scored 24 goals in 97 matches.
That form earned him a switch to the Championship but stints at both Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City haven’t worked out for him. He has managed to show what he can do recently with Blackpool.
The Tangerines face competition now from the Latics though if they are snap him up full-time. The ball lies in Stoke City’s court here and they will want to get the best price possible if they are to let him go.
