“I’d Prefer…” – Ipswich Urged to Target Different Watford Midfielder Instead of £8m-Rated Tom Dele-Bashiru
Ipswich Town’s interest in Watford midfielder Tom Dele-Bashiru has resurfaced, but not everyone is convinced he’s the right fit.
According to Football League World, the Tractor Boys are considering a renewed bid for Dele-Bashiru after initially expressing interest during the January window. The 25-year-old made 27 Championship appearances last season and has two years left on his current deal at Vicarage Road. However, Watford are reportedly holding out for around £8 million – a figure that could complicate negotiations.
With Massimo Luongo departing and loan players like Kalvin Phillips and Jens-Lys Cajuste returning to their parent clubs, Kieran McKenna is short on central midfield depth. Strengthening in that area is a priority if Ipswich are to mount another Premier League push.
Ipswich Fan Shares Cautious View on Dele-Bashiru Pursuit
FLW fan pundit Adam Wilkin weighed in on the potential signing, and while he sees some appeal, he has reservations.
“Dele-Bashiru is an interesting link. He fits the profile – tall, quick, physical – traits our midfield has been missing,” Wilkin said.
“That said, he hasn’t been a regular starter at Watford. Spending big money on him seems unlikely, and he’d probably be a squad player at best.
“With our recent injury issues, bringing in another player with a history of fitness concerns would be a risk – especially for that price.
“If we were to sign a Watford midfielder, I’d actually prefer Edo Kayembe. He impressed me last season and has had a strong campaign this year too.”
Dele-Bashiru a Risky but Potentially Rewarding Addition
While Dele-Bashiru’s technical ability and box-to-box energy make him a logical target, his injury record and the hefty fee could make it a gamble.
In contrast, Kayembe– who tallied eight goals and one assist in 44 Championship appearances – might offer more attacking threat. The 26-year-old DR Congo international could even push Conor Chaplin for the number 10 role.
With Ipswich facing a challenging return to the Championship and a major midfield rebuild ahead, recruitment decisions like this will be critical. Whether Dele-Bashiru ends up in McKenna’s squad or not, Ipswich’s midfield targets will continue to spark debate throughout the window.
