“I’m hoping to be the one that’s leading us into the Football League” – Town captain Sam Johnson on Shaymen’s promotion chances ahead of play-off eliminator
An FC Halifax Town side without Sam Johnson is almost unthinkable. The towering goalkeeper and club captain has been the bedrock of the Shaymen for more than a decade, making over 450 appearances and becoming a cult hero at The Shay. As the club prepares for their National League play-off eliminator, Johnson’s passion and leadership are once again front and centre, with the shot-stopper dreaming of capping his long service with a historic promotion.
Speaking ahead of the do-or-die clash, Johnson couldn’t hide his excitement and determination. “I’ve been here for a long time and seen a lot of ups and downs,” he said. “But this is one of the best groups we’ve had. I’m hoping to be the one that’s leading us into the Football League. That would mean everything.”
Halifax’s rise into the play-off spots this season has been marked by grit, resilience, and a tight-knit squad that has consistently punched above its weight. Johnson, 31, has been ever-present, not just between the posts, but as a calming influence and leader in the dressing room. His performances have drawn widespread praise, with fans and pundits alike crediting him as a key factor in the Shaymen’s strong campaign.
“When I look at this team, I see a group that fights for each other,” Johnson said. “We’ve had to deal with injuries, setbacks, and tough results, but we’ve stuck together. That’s why we’re in this position.”
This season’s play-off eliminator is yet another hurdle in Halifax’s bid to return to the Football League for the first time since the original Halifax Town went into liquidation in 2008. For Johnson, who joined in 2015, the journey has been long and at times frustrating — but the goal remains clear.
“We know what’s at stake,” he said. “Getting this club back into the Football League would be an incredible achievement — for the players, for the staff, and especially for the fans who’ve stuck with us.”
Manager Chris Millington has praised Johnson’s influence repeatedly throughout the campaign, calling him “the heartbeat of the squad.” That leadership will be crucial as Halifax enter the high-pressure environment of the play-offs, where one mistake can be the difference between heartbreak and glory.
“The play-offs are brutal,” Johnson admitted. “But I believe in this team. We’ve shown we can compete with anyone in this league. It’s just about getting it right on the day.”
While the veteran keeper hasn’t ruled out his long-term future beyond this season, there’s no doubt where his focus lies right now.
“All I care about at the moment is this play-off run. If I can help get us over the line and into the Football League, it would be one of the proudest moments of my life,” he said.
With Johnson leading the charge, Halifax fans can dare to dream that their long wait for league football might finally be nearing its end.
