Interest in Marco Silva could spell trouble for Sheffield Wednesday
The rumours that Marco Silva, the manager of Fulham, is considering a move to Saudi Arabia must undoubtedly
worry Sheffield Wednesday.
The Portuguese is reportedly one of the top applicants for the Al-Hilal position, and Fulham is reportedly getting
ready to accept an offer from the Middle Eastern company, according to talkSPORT.
Al-Hilal, a dominant force in Saudi Arabia, is also thought to be considering alternatives from Nottingham Forest
manager Nuno Espírito Santo and Simone Inzaghi of Inter Milan.
With Silva seemingly one of those who is in the frame for the job, the prospect of Fulham potentially needing to
appoint a new manager this summer will surely have set the alarm bells ringing for Sheffield Wednesday, given that
the Cottagers are one of the latest clubs to be credited with an interest in Danny Rohl.
Rohl has been the focus of a lot of attention lately, which is not surprising given the outstanding work he has done at
Hillsborough.
After taking over the team after their worst-ever league season start, the 36-year-old led Wednesday to survival in
spectacular fashion last season.
Danny Rohl Sheffield Wednesday record (as per Transfermarkt) | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Season | Games | W | D | L | Win % |
2024/25 | 46 | 15 | 13 | 18 | 32.6% |
2023/24 | 35 | 15 | 5 | 15 | 42.85% |
Given the restricted budget he had, he has led the Owls to the top half of the table this season and even flirted with
play-off spots for a few weeks. This is an absolutely incredible accomplishment.
Crystal Palace and Fulham are the most recent teams to be connected to the German, who has started to establish
himself as one of the best young coaches in the world.
Wednesday should therefore be especially concerned about the reports of Al-Hilal’s interest in Silva.
With his present contract set to expire in 2026, TalkSPORT understands that the Portuguese manager is delaying a
new agreement at Craven Cottage.
With interest from Saudi Arabia now on the table, it might mark the end of his career with the West London outfit.
Silva has previously declined Saudi offers, therefore it is thought that he is eager to depart.
Moves elsewhere could trigger an approach for Rohl
With Rohl’s future in South Yorkshire very much uncertain, it’s entirely possible that he could have overseen his final
game for the club in Saturday’s 1-1 draw away at Watford.
Although there are currently no public reports of Wednesday receiving an official approach at any point recently,
there are plenty of clubs that are admirers of the German.
In recent weeks, Rohl has reportedly drawn interest from RB Leipzig, Southampton, and Leicester City. The Foxes
are expected to fire current manager Ruud Van Nistelrooy, and the latter two are currently without a manager.
Even though such links have been for some time, it appears that they are currently only links. But rumours of a
possible move to Palace or Fulham might be a far bigger danger to the Owls right now.
With their own managers currently showing interest, both clubs see Rohl as a possible replacement.
In addition to the Saudi connections, Silva is rumoured to be a target for Tottenham Hotspur, while Oliver Glasner,
the manager of the Eagles, has apparently held talks to take over at Leipzig.
Rohl’s tenure in South Yorkshire may come to an end if either of those possible agreements materialise.
The German hasn’t hidden his ambitions and frustrations from public view of late and, with top-level clubs once
again circling, it feels increasingly likely that this summer could bring his time in S6 to a close.
