Ipswich Town could hijack Birmingham City deal for Chuba Akpom.

Ipswich Town could hijack Birmingham City’s move for Ajax striker Chuba Akpom ahead of the clubs’ Championship opener on Friday night.

The 29-year-old forward was on the verge of signing a loan deal with St Andrew’s, which could have turned into a £7 million permanent move if the Midlands club won back-to-back Premier League promotions.

It has been widely reported this morning that he has withdrawn from today’s medical at Birmingham due to a late approach from his former club Middlesbrough, where he won the Championship Golden Boot award in 2022/23.

The EADT and Ipswich Star understand that Ipswich, as well as Greek side Olympiakos, are interested.

Kieran McKenna is looking to bolster a forward line that currently consists of only George Hirst and Ali Al-Hamadi. Liam Delap, last season’s top scorer with 12 goals, joined Chelsea earlier this summer after his £30 million relegation release clause was triggered.

Akpom, a former Arsenal youngster, spent time on loan at Brentford, Coventry, Nottingham Forest, Hull, and Brighton before starting his career at Greek club PAOK Salonika. He returned to England to sign for Middlesbrough, where he won the Championship Golden Boot award in 2022/23 after scoring 28 goals.

A £12.3 million transfer to Ajax followed. He scored 21 goals in his first season and a half with the Dutch giants before spending the second half of last season on loan at French club Lille, where he scored three times.

Town are also working on a deal to bring midfielder Jens Cajuste back from Napoli ahead of the big game.
