Ipswich Town pulled off masterstroke in £30m Liam Delap sale, Chelsea agreed to ‘very rare’ deal

Ipswich Town executed a brilliant move in the £30 million Chelsea agreed to a “very rare” deal to sell Liam Delap.

Premier League vultures have started to circle around Portman Road after Ipswich Town was demoted to the Championship following only one season in the top division.

Head coach Kieran McKenna’s future at the Tractor Boys is in doubt due to McKenna’s recent connections to the Brentford position, and losing the man who orchestrated their consecutive promotions would be a devastating blow to their hopes for the upcoming campaign.

Liam Delap was recruited by Chelsea for £30 million before the summer transfer market closed for a week because of the Club World Cup. The striker signed a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

The Ipswich management executed a brilliant move during the negotiations over Delap with the Blues, even though they lost their best player.

The Englishman Delap made 37 appearances in his first season at Ipswich, scoring 12 goals and dishing out two assists, but he was unable to keep McKenna’s team from being relegated from the top flight.

Chelsea paid £30 million for his talents, triggering the release clause in his Tractor Boys contract that was activated following their relegation from the Premier League, because of his goal-scoring ability and potential to become one of the league’s most prolific frontmen.

This release clause and the ensuing sell-on price that Ipswich has negotiated with the London team have resulted in some excellent business from the club’s leadership.

“I thought the Delap deal was really, really interesting, actually,” Chief Football correspondent Graeme Bailey disclosed in an exclusive EFL Analysis.

It is extremely uncommon for a club to successfully negotiate a sell-on provision in a contract when all that was needed to complete the transfer was the fulfillment of a release clause.

Ipswich added a new sell-on clause, but Chelsea was clearly able to reduce the amount they were paying in one go thanks to that.

“Usually, that’s it after a release clause is paid. There won’t be any sell-on fees or other add-ons if a player has a release clause since that’s the whole idea of a release clause: you pay the money and it’s over.

However, in this case, discussions were held on the terms of the agreement, Chelsea’s payment, and the inclusion of a sell-on clause. That is extremely uncommon.

Ahead of their Championship campaign, Ipswich must now attempt to replace one of the best young center-forward possibilities in English football.

The team must, however, focus on one exceptional striker option, who has long been a Tractor Boys target.
