Ipswich Town & Southampton FC both have very good reasons to sign £4.5m-rated star

With more than 50 Scottish Premiership matches for Motherwell and a few senior Scottish national team caps before turning 19,

Lennon Miller is regarded as one of the most promising young players in Scottish football.

As a result, a long queue of clubs, including Southampton and Ipswich Town, two recently relegated Premier League teams, are vying

for the 18-year-old’s services this summer.

Will Still and Kieran McKenna will both be keen to sign midfield players this summer. The Saints might begin the 2025–26 season

without Joe Aribo and Flynn Downes, while Ipswich has seen loanees Kalvin Phillips, Jens Cajuste, and Julio Ensisco leave along with

now-free agent Massimo Luongo.

Miller would be a huge coup for either team in their quest to return to the Premier League because of his versatility in central midfield

positions and leadership at such a young age. They should fight hard against foreign top-flight teams to secure a deal. Miller is valued

at £4.5 million.

Lennon Miller’s SPL excellence means Ipswich and Southampton interest is a no-brainer

It is impossible to undervalue Miller’s accomplishments in the SPL at such a young age, even though some may view the league as

being of lower overall quality than other divisions outside of Scotland.

The 2006-born player started every league game he was available for the season, was the first name on Motherwell’s squad sheet, and

even led the team in the latter few months of 2024.

With two more goals and six more assists in the 2024–25 season than in the previous one, he was able to demonstrate significant

progress from his debut season at the club, and it appears that he will continue to grow in 2025–2026.

Miller shown last season that he could play a variety of midfield roles. Although he plays the centre “number eight” position most of

the time, he has demonstrated that he can drop deeper as a holding midfielder or even be counted on to join assaults as a more

creative outlet.

Having players who can play multiple key positions is crucial during a long 46-game Championship season. Considering that he was

only substituted five times during his 32 league starts in 2024–2025, it is not surprising that both Southampton and Ipswich are

interested in him given his stamina and willingness to continue playing at such a young age.

Lennon Miller’s 2024/25 Scottish Premiership stats, per Fotmob
Assists 8
Chances created 50
Touches in the opposition box 62
Duels won 182
Recoveries 203

Per Fotmob, Miller ranked inside the top 10% of central midfielders in the SPL for a range of stats, including chances created, assists,

and accurate long balls, but also duels won, recoveries and interceptions, which shows how complete a player he already is.

A need for midfield reinforcement should push the promoted duo to increase their pursuit of Lennon Miller

Even if people didn’t consider that both teams are searching for starting midfielders after being relegated from the Premier League,

Lennon Miller would be a statement addition to either team.

With Kalvin Phillips, Jens Cajuste, and Julio Ensico all back at their parent clubs, Kieran McKenna is in dire need of bodies in the

middle ahead of Ipswich’s crucial season opener against Birmingham City. Last season, a large portion of Ipswich’s middle pack was

loaned from other clubs.

Additionally, even though Southampton has Shea Charles and Will Smallbone as midfield options for the upcoming season, in

addition to Joe Aribo and Flynn Downes, who may still leave the team this summer, adding a player of Miller’s calibre could make him

their new star in the middle as the Saints aim to return to the Premier League as quickly as possible.

You wouldn’t blame Miller for wanting to emulate fellow Scottish midfielders Scott McTominay, Lewis Ferguson, and Billy Gilmour

given their recent success in Italy. Both teams will probably have to contend with Serie A teams Como and Udinese this summer.

You wouldn’t blame him, though, for wanting to play in the Premier League. Should he do so, Southampton and Ipswich ought to be

vying for his services.
