Ipswich Town urged to only seal deal for 12-goal winger if Omari Hutchinson leaves

Ipswich Town is advised to only finalize the deal for a winger with 12 goals if Omari Hutchinson departs.

Earlier this week, FLW exclusively disclosed that the Tractor Boys are considering a move for the winger.

The 23-year-old can negotiate terms with a new team for the upcoming season as he is a free agent this summer.

Last season, Poku helped the squad finish 18th in League One with 12 goals and eight assists.

Adam Wilkin, a fan commentator for FLW in Ipswich, stated that this would have been a more thrilling signing a few years ago when asked if a deal for Poku would be a coup.

He currently believes that if Omari Hutchinson left Portman Road, it would be more sensible to sign the forward because the Suffolk team has many attacking options.

Wilkin told Football League World, “We seem to be linked with Poku every transfer window, and if this had happened a couple of years ago, I’d be saying ‘yeah, absolutely, a very good signing, who could step up to the Championship.'”

However, I don’t believe it should be viewed as a coup considering the current status of our squad.

“The only way I can see it happening is if Omari Hutchinson left, and I don’t think he would be as good as what we already have in the building.”

Since Poku is only 23, he appears to be a good alternative option that could be nurtured if he does leave. With McKenna’s guidance, you could strive to elevate him to the Championship level.

“I believe that given his League One performance over the past two seasons, including his 20 goal contribution from the previous campaign, and his profile, he may be used as a substitute player, just like Hutchinson was in his debut.

Season Appearances (Starts) Goals (Assists)
2021-22 20 (11) 0 (2)
2022-23 37 (30) 4 (8)
2023-24 37 (33) 11 (7)
2024-25 27 (25) 12 (8)

However, if Hutchinson remains, I don’t see him joining the team because Wes Burns, Poku, Chie Ogbene, and Hutchinson will all be in the right-midfield position, which is actually his role. He’s inverted, so he’s left-footed coming off the right, which is an alternative to having there, but Hutchinson currently fills that position.

“I think he would be a good signing, and if Hutchinson were to leave, I would be happy with him, but I don’t see it happening until that happens.”

After finishing 19th in the Premier League the previous season under Kieran McKenna, Ipswich is getting ready to return to the Championship.
