Ireland rugby star wows pub-goers with Fred Flintstone accordion session

Doherty’s Bar in Mulranny Mayo got some star treatment from Robbie Henshaw over the weekend

Robbie Henshaw, an Irish and Lions centre, was captured on camera during a wild stag party in Mayo over the weekend.

The Leinster man was with his friends in the famed pub Doherty’s in Mulranny, Mayo, when they broke into song.

Henshaw astonished staff and residents by playing accordion with his guitar and tin whistle-playing buddies.

Over the previous 48 hours, the clip has been widely shared on the pub’s social media accounts, with over 100,000 views.

The popular boozer were overjoyed to see the former Grand Slam champion walk through their doors, posting: “We were thrilled to welcome Irish Rugby international and Leinster star Robbie Henshaw today — and who better to treat us to a few tunes on the box!”

Many Irish rugby fans expected the rugby icon to join the British and Irish Lions on their triumphant 2-1 tour of Australia this summer, but head coach Andy Farrell chose not to choose him.

The 32-year-old remains an important part of Ireland’s rugby future, and he may even be considered for the next Lions tour of New Zealand in 2029.

The centre has previously demonstrated a strong flair for the craic agus ceol, even performing accordion on The Late Late Show.

Last year, the rugby player was spotted visiting Wexford’s Fleadh Cheoil, when he performed a fantastic rendition of Galway Girl in front of an enthusiastic audience.

The Athlone native comes from a long line of musicians and has previously spoken about how traditional music played an important role in his family’s life growing up in Westmeath.

After whetting his musical appetite on the tinwhistle, the multi-talented rugby great switched to the button accordion.

While Robbie is clearly enjoying his summer break, his attention will soon return to the pitch as Leinster begin their new season in South Africa next month.

The newly crowned URC champions will also meet arch rivals Munster in Croke Park in October.
