Frontman Norman Bassette’s first season with Coventry City has been everything but smooth.
Arriving from French second-tier team Caen in August 2024, many expected the then-teenager to be the Championship’s next hero, but the Belgian has done anything but.
Despite being praised by Mark Robins at the start of last season, Bassette only made two appearances before being dismissed, but he got a fresh start under Frank Lampard.
Bassette would go on to be a regular under the ex-Chelsea icon in the early phases, appearing prominently from the beginning of November to the turn of 2025.
However, as the season progressed, minutes diminished, with only one-minute cameos off the bench against Bristol City, Blackburn Rovers, Swansea City, and Watford.
Bassette made only four appearances for the rest of the season after his brief debut in South Wales at the beginning of February, raising severe doubts about his future under Lampard.

Bassette’s lack of playing time in recent months has led to speculation that he may return to his country this summer, with Standard Liege and Anderlecht allegedly interested in signing him.
With this in mind, FLW’s Coventry City fan pundit has shared his predictions for Bassette’s future in a Sky Blues shirt.
Coventry City urged to negotiate Norman Bassette’s loan exit rather than a permanent switch.
Speaking to Football League World, our Coventry City fan pundit Chris Deez revealed that Bassette may need to leave the club in order to earn regular game time, although he would prefer a loan exit over a permanent move.
Deez said, “Norman Bassette is a peculiar one. From what we’ve seen of him, he has the fire and passion that you want to see in your players; he frustrates and whips up the opposing side, causing them to foul him.
“Frank Lampard has only had wonderful things to say about him, including how much he admires him, his attitude, and his passion. But the lad has scarcely played, which makes little sense given how miserably our strikers did, particularly in the second half of last season.
“I am not surprised that teams have expressed interest in signing him on a permanent basis. I’d rather loan him out, whether to someone in our league, the lowest half of the table, or League One.
“It’s difficult to say what level of football he can offer. We haven’t seen it consistently enough, and I’m not sure whether he’s a Belgian League or League One player. Who knows.
“But if he’s not in Lampard’s immediate plans, I’d consider loaning him out for at least six months.” I’m not too concerned with where he goes on loan as long as they use him on a regular basis so that we can get a decent sense of what this guy is about.
“I think most Coventry fans like him and want to see what he can do for us.” Coventry City should sanction Norman Bassette’s loan deal to continue growth.
Norman Bassette originally signed for Coventry City on a four-year contract worth roughly €3.5 million, so there is no need for the Sky Blues to rush to end his short tenure at the CBS Arena.
At the age of 20, Bassette requires a lot more experience at the highest end of European football to be considered for a regular starting role under Frank Lampard, and he could profit from a move away to a new side that will trust him to lead the way.
It’s also worth mentioning that Bassette is allegedly still determined to compete for his spot in the West Midlands, so it seems logical to approve a short-term move abroad so he can return to Coventry the following season and demonstrate how much he’s grown.
While it may be some time before Bassette reaches the pinnacle of his ability, Coventry should be patient enough to believe that he can do so within the course of his contract, and they might end up with a second-tier marksman if they believe in his potential.
