It’s “baffling”—Exclusive: Sky Sports pundit reacts to Birmingham City, Jamie Vardy transfer news

If Birmingham City wants to persuade Jamie Vardy to join the project at St Andrew’s, they must make him their

first-choice striker, according to Sky Sports analyst Lee Hendrie.

The Blues are active in the summer transfer market as they continue to intensify their preparations for the 2025–

2026 season.

Birmingham has brought nine new players to the West Midlands with Tom Wagner’s resounding support: In

addition to James Beadle, Tommy Doyle, Phil Neumann, Demarai Grey, Kanya Fujimoto, Bright Osayi-Samuel, and

Kyogo Furuhashi joining the team, Taylor Gardner-Hickman and Alfons Sampsted have turned their loan moves into

permanent places.

Leeds United claims that Mateo Joseph is worth £10 million and that the Blues are keen to expand their striker

options once more.

Birmingham is also interested in former Leicester City star Jamie Vardy; according to Football Insider, the team is

getting ready to make a move for the free agency.

With this news in mind, pundit Lee Hendrie has weighed in with his thoughts over whether a move for Vardy can

materialise.

Lee Hendrie urges Birmingham City to meet Jamie Vardy demand in order to complete capture

Former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie told Football League World exclusively that if Birmingham City wants to

entice Jamie Vardy, 38, to the West Midlands this summer, they would need to make him their primary striker.

“The Vardy situation is confusing, isn’t it?” Hendrie remarked. You hear and read about his goals, including his

desire to remain and play for a prestigious European team.

“I still believe he can do a job, so I think it would be a big signing for Birmingham City. Jamie Vardy’s only issue is

that he’s one of those players who would want to be and have to be the main striker if he did come to Birmingham.”

“They’ve got strength in depth in that area, you certainly have to look at that, but I don’t think he’ll be one of those

players that will be dropping down to the Championship and being a bit-part player, I think he’ll want to be the key

player and that would be the big question mark.

“The age is always another question mark but Jamie Vardy is Jamie Vardy. He’s always capable of scoring goals, and

it just shows where Birmingham are at with who they’re attracting.”

Birmingham City forward competition could put Birmingham City, Jamie Vardy move in doubt

With 18 goals scored in his most recent appearance in the second division, Jamie Vardy would undoubtedly still be

able to score goals on a regular basis in the Championship.

But Vardy will prefer guarantees over frequent starts, and Lee Hendrie is correct when he says that the Blues might

not be able to do that given the competition in that area.

The West Midlands team recently made the audacious £10 million acquisition of Kyogo Furuhashi, and after such a

significant outlay, it is unlikely that the Japanese international will be benched. Meanwhile, Jay Stansfield is steadily

getting better and will aim to be a second-tier striker next season to contribute to more success.

It’s hard to imagine Chris Davies switching from his tried-and-true 4-2-3-1 formation to make room for Vardy right

away, though, given he has chosen to stick with it throughout their League One season that won them promotion.

Given all of these considerations, Birmingham doesn’t seem like the ideal location for Vardy’s next endeavour, and

the team’s strength may force him to stay on the sidelines.
