“It’s happening” – Norwich City supporters react as surprise Jonathan Rowe message issued
One of the Canaries’ standout players from the 2023–24 campaign, Rowe scored 12 goals in the Championship as David Wagner led the team to the playoffs, where Leeds United defeated them in the semi-finals.
During the summer, there was a lot of discussion about transfers, but when the 2024–25 season began in August, Rowe declined to play for City because of the interest in his services. A few weeks later, he made an impressive impression at French powerhouse Marseille.
Norwich managed to arrange a £17 million deal with Marseille, including a sell-on clause, but he will only become a permanent member of Roberto De Zerbi’s team this coming summer, with the initial part of his tenure at the club being a loan.
However, the winger in France has not been doing well and has not had the impact that was anticipated of him.
The 22-year-old forward has only made one league start since November 8 and has only scored three goals in 25 appearances in Ligue 1.
French reports state that De Zerbi wants to get go of Rowe this summer because he didn’t make much of an impression in his rookie season, but they still have to pay a hefty price for him when the transfer window reopens.
Despite the fact that Rowe left in August and will soon return permanently, Norwich’s Twitter account unexpectedly wished the winger a happy birthday on Wednesday in the wake of his troubles at Marseille.
Naturally, this has City supporters wondering what Rowe’s future holds, as birthday greetings for players who have left the team are not exactly customary.
Could Rowe make a surprise return to Carrow Road on loan next season? That’s what some fans are hoping for.
However, some fans would only accept the quick-footed wideman back if he apologized for his handling of the transfer drama last summer. Another Norwich supporter believes that Rowe will finish his “redemption arc” at Carrow Road next season, if he is willing to return to the team whose academy he excelled.
Some fans, however, have not been so happy about the unexpected message. One fan has said that Rowe might try to fake a return to Norwich because his time at Marseille hasn’t gone as planned.
Another fan called Norwich’s decision to wish Rowe a happy birthday “strange” considering the circumstances surrounding his departure, while another noted that Rowe left Norwich “in a strop” after refusing to play games, which suggests that some at Carrow Road wouldn’t welcome him back.
