James Penrice leaves Hearts camp as Greek side close in

James Penrice is closing in on a move to Greek giants AEK Athens after leaving Heart of Midlothian’s training camp.

The left-back only joined Hearts last summer, on a free transfer from Livingston, but enjoyed an outstanding season which resulted in him picking up the club’s player of the year award and earning a spot in the PFA Scotland team of the year.

As expected, that brought him attention from other clubs with West Brom one of the English clubs believed to be interested.

However, a move abroad is in the offing after the Tynecastle club accepted a seven-figure offer from AEK Athens.

Hearts Standard reports that a sell-on clause will also be part of the deal, although there is still work to be done for it to be finalised.

Penrice has been in Spain for a warm weather pre-season training camp with the rest of the Jambos squad but left this morning to head for Athens, where he will complete a medical.

The 26-year-old played 45 minutes of a closed door friendly against St Mirren this week but his teammates will have to do without him against Crawley Town today.

Hearts and their recruitment partners Jamestown Analytics may now look for a replacement, though they do have Harry Milne and Stephen Kingsley who can both play left-back.

In better news for their fans, Lawrence Shankland this week joined up with his teammates at the Spanish base and signed a new three-year contract.
