Japhet Tanganga to Clear Medical Amid Leeds United Transfer Development

Leeds United are reportedly closing in on the signing of Millwall centre-back Japhet Tanganga, with the defender expected to pass a medical as talks progress over a summer switch to Elland Road.

According to sources close to the deal, the Whites have made the 25-year-old a key defensive target in their efforts to bolster Daniel Farke’s squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign. Tanganga, who joined Millwall permanently last summer from Tottenham Hotspur after a successful loan spell, enjoyed a solid season in the Championship and has attracted significant interest from clubs chasing promotion.

In a move that could become official in the coming weeks, Leeds are optimistic that the deal will be wrapped up smoothly, pending the results of Tanganga’s medical. Injury expert Dr Rajpal Brar has offered exclusive insight into the defender’s fitness profile, particularly in light of his injury record from last season.

“Japhet Tanganga had a relatively clean season in 2024/25,” Dr Brar said. “He featured in 40 Championship matches, showing durability and an ability to maintain consistent form across a demanding schedule. The few games he missed were minor and mostly related to load management rather than any significant muscular or structural issues. From a medical standpoint, there’s nothing to suggest he won’t clear the Leeds United assessment.”

Tanganga’s physical resilience will be a key factor for Leeds, who are looking to strengthen their backline following the departures of key defenders and ongoing uncertainty around a few others. With promotion ambitions still firmly in place after narrowly missing out last season, the club sees Tanganga as a player who can bring experience, versatility, and composure to the heart of defence.

Primarily a centre-back, the former England youth international is also comfortable operating at right-back, making him an attractive proposition in a system that values adaptability. His performances for Millwall last season were characterised by powerful aerial displays, aggressive man-marking, and a calmness in possession — attributes Leeds hope will elevate their defensive unit.

It’s understood that discussions between the two clubs have progressed positively in recent days, with Leeds eager to finalise the personal terms and conduct the routine medical before making an official announcement. Millwall are reportedly open to the sale, given Tanganga’s contract situation and the club’s interest in reinvesting in other areas.

Tanganga, who rose through the ranks at Spurs, endured a series of stop-start campaigns in North London due to injury setbacks and managerial changes. However, the move to Millwall proved a turning point in his career, giving him a platform to play regularly and reignite his development.

Leeds fans will be encouraged by the expert medical assessment and the club’s proactive approach in targeting Championship-proven talent. If the transfer is completed as expected, Tanganga could become a key figure in Farke’s push for automatic promotion, with pre-season preparations entering their final stretch.

With the medical now expected imminently, all signs point to Tanganga wearing white at Elland Road this season — a move that could prove pivotal in the club’s ambitions of returning to the Premier League.
