Jarrell Miller withdraws from Portman Road fight with Fabio Wardley

Why it’s important The match, which was the first professional boxing event ever held at Portman Road, was supposed to be a career-defining homecoming for the unbeaten Ipswich boxer in the stadium of his boyhood club.

Details: Miller, 36, will no longer be permitted to compete in the contentious fight after slapping Wardley during their contentious press conference on April 7.

It is believed that the card has not been canceled and that Miller will be replaced by a different boxer to compete against Wardley for the WBA heavyweight title in the meantime.

The larger picture: Wardley, who has always supported Ipswich Town, gave up his British crown in March in order to focus on winning a world championship.

“As a proud Tractor Boy born and bred in Ipswich, this is a dream come true for me,” Wardley remarked before.

“Fighting for a world title at Portman Road means everything to me. That’s what I live for, even though I have a formidable opponent ahead of me.”

Originally scheduled to take on WBA’regular’ champion Kubrat Pulev, Miller’s fight was rescheduled to include Wardley.

The undefeated 30-year-old Ipswich fighter has 18 wins and one draw on his record, with 17 triumphs via stoppage.

What they’re saying: Despite Miller’s contentious reputation, Wardley had been positive about him when the fight was first announced.

“He’s a top 10 contender, he’s challenged with the big boys before, and I’m in that world title race and I want to prove myself against one of those top-level guys,” Wardley stated.

“I think he’s a perfect fit for that because he brings energy and he brings the fight in simple terms.”

Information about tickets: The event will still be held at Portman Road, and it is rumored that Tractor Boys admirer and music icon Ed Sheeran will perform.

Ipswich’s undefeated heavyweight’s homecoming on June 7th is sure to be a momentous night for the town, regardless of Wardley’s opponent. The event is still remembered as the first-ever boxing match at Portman Road.
