Jay Stansfield has revealed that he sought assistance to deal with the “stick” he received from opposition supporters throughout the 2024/25 campaign due to the money Birmingham City paid for him last summer.

Despite all of the major moves in the Premier League, the deal that saw Stansfield leave Fulham and join the Blues was arguably the biggest story of the summer window.

Birmingham had already broken the League One transfer record before acquiring the forward on Deadline Day, but they completely shattered it by agreeing to a deal with the Cottagers for the then-21-year-old.

Birmingham Live reports that City agreed to pay £12 million for Stansfield, while The Athletic believes the figure is between £12-15 million with additional add-ons.

The Daily Telegraph’s Sam Dean reported that Stansfield was purchased for £15 million guaranteed, with an additional £5 million in potential add-ons.

Stansfield’s 19 goals in the third tier, nine of which came from the penalty spot, were not enough to quiet the hecklers who felt City paid too much for him. He eventually resorted to consulting people who could help him deal with the pressure of his situation.

“I wouldn’t say it weighed heavily on me, but I got to a point in the season where I thought this is getting difficult, so I’m going to have to find a way to manage it,” revealed the striker on the abuse he faced via Birmingham Live. “I spoke with specialists around the club because they know how to deal with high-pressure situations.

“Getting that help from a football psychologist, learning how to deal with different situations, has been extremely beneficial this season.” It’s been tough getting hammered every game for no reason.”

He added, “They’re the only ones on my side right now. When I first arrived, there was a lot of noise, and I’ve gotten some flak for it, but that’s just part of the game, and I think I’ve handled it well this season and done my talking on the pitch.”

Jay Stanfield’s price tag abuse was unavoidable, unfortunately.

Some non-Blues fans expected the former Exeter City loanee to never live up to his price tag. There has rarely been a more easy stick to beat a player with than the money spent on Stansfield last summer, and, as fans frequently do, it was fully used against him.

The player and his camp should have seen this coming, and they most likely did. It’s surprising that he didn’t receive the necessary support after his permanent move to Birmingham.
