Jesper Karlsson lifts lid on Aberdeen move and what Lewis Ferguson said to him about Dons

Jesper Karlsson reveals the Aberdeen transfer and Lewis Ferguson’s remarks to him regarding Dons.

After his much anticipated loan move from Bologna, Sweden international Jesper Karlsson hopes that his reunion with Jimmy Thelin at Aberdeen would help his career “fly” once more.

In perhaps the most striking deal a Scottish club has made this summer, the 27-year-old, who was transferred by AZ Alkmaar to the Italian team for over 11 million euros in August 2023, joined the Dons on transfer deadline day. Karlsson said that a major factor in his choice to go from Serie A to the William Hill Premiership was the presence of Reds manager Thelin, who managed him at Elfsborg from 2018 to 2020. In a club interview, he stated, “I have a good relationship with Jimmy since I played in Sweden, so this was a good choice for me.” He played a major role in my decision to come here.

“Even though I was young when he started at Elfsborg, I vividly recall how he treated the players.” Extremely professional with a strong human component. When I didn’t play in the same circumstance, he helped my career take off. I began to play when he was a little harsh with me. We enjoyed our time together in Sweden, and we stayed in touch while I was in Holland and Italy as well. Karlsson was limited to just 15 appearances, eight of which were as a starter, during his first 18 months at Bologna. He then spent the second part of the previous season on loan at Lecce. The winger, who has 14 Sweden caps, added, “I had a super time in Italy, I like it a lot.” It’s at the top level, with lots of talented players and fierce competition. It’s difficult, of course, but I struggle to get my clothing. You have to strive and sometimes you need luck, but even though I thought I had the qualities to be there, I didn’t have this moment. However, I have to play football, and that was a big priority for me.

Although I haven’t been playing as frequently or consistently in Italy lately, I spoke with the other sports directors at Aberdeen and felt extremely welcome. In my case, it was crucial that they wanted me here. Therefore, I believe that both of us benefited from the scenario. That folks are glad to see me here makes me happy. Since I arrived here, I have truly felt this.
