Joe Harper: Aberdeen striker Ester Sokler can deliver on goalscoring potential in the new season.

Aberdeen legend Harper assesses why Slovenian attacker Ester Sokler has the potential to score goals this season.

Ester Sokler, an Aberdeen striker, has the potential to finally get on the scoresheet this season. Last season, the Slovenian striker struggled due to an injury, scoring only seven goals. Only two of the goals came in the Premiership.
However, both league goals were spectacular, demonstrating Sokler’s talent. Sokler’s overhead scissors kick goal in the 3-3 draw with Hibs at Easter Road was a stunning strike and one of the greatest in Scotland this season.
His goal in the 2-2 draw with Celtic at Parkhead was particularly outstanding, as Sokler timed his move perfectly to beat the offside trap.

In a high-pressure, high-stakes encounter in Glasgow, the striker kept his cool and raced in on goal before finishing softly. These aims demonstrate Sokler’s capabilities.

And the upcoming season could be the one in which he establishes himself as Aberdeen’s most prolific goalscorer.

Difficult to dislodge Bojan Miovski

Aberdeen signed Sokler for roughly £300,000 in the summer of 2023, although he failed to obtain consistent starts in his debut season due to Bojan Miovski’s spectacular play. When Miovski was transferred for a multimillion pound fee last summer, Sokler had the opportunity to become Aberdeen’s new goal hero.

However, injury problems and the form of Millwall attacker Kevin Nisbet, who is on loan, worked against Sokler.

Nisbet and fellow loan attacker Oday Dabbagh have both returned to their respective clubs. Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin has signed striker Kusini Yengi, who was with Championship Portsmouth last season.

Yengi is a well-known Australian international who contributed significantly to his country’s successful qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Winger Milanovic an exciting signing

At the moment it looks like the battle will be between Sokler and Yengi to lead the line – although why not use both in a strike partnership?

Aberdeen boss Thelin could yet further bolster his attack during the summer transfer window by signing another striker.

The arrival of winger Nicolas Milanovic from Australian A-League club Western Sydney Wanderers is a huge boost for Aberdeen. Milanovic will provide another threat and option down the flank, which can only be a good thing for strikers like Sokler. Milanovic arrives at Pittodrie after winning the prestigious A-League player of the year title. Milanovic also received his first call-up to the Australian senior squad for a training camp last month, indicating that he is a player on the rise.

Along with Topi Keskinen and Shayden Morris, Milanovic will be a threat to opposing teams in the wide areas.

Service to strikers from wingers

Morris, Aberdeen’s player of the year, wreaked havoc for opposing teams last season with his quickness and direct play.

He made explosive plays off the bench and began to carry that influence into games he started. Keskinen also had a successful debut season at Pittodrie after joining from Finnish top flight team HJK Helsinki.

I believe last season was just the tip of the iceberg for Keskinen, who will achieve even higher levels in the following season.

Milanovic, Keskinen, and Morris all possess the ability and pace to provide ammo for the strikers. The upcoming season could be one in which Sokler benefits from hitting the goal trail.
