Joe Quigley Joins Oldham Athletic Ahead of Colchester Clash

Oldham Athletic have strengthened their attacking options ahead of Saturday’s League Two fixture against Colchester United by completing the signing of striker Joe Quigley on a two-year deal.

Quigley becomes the club’s second new arrival of a busy evening at Boundary Park, following the earlier announcement of defender Jamie Robson. Both players have arrived after reaching agreements to terminate their contracts at Forest Green Rovers.

The 27-year-old frontman, who brings valuable experience from spells at clubs including AFC Bournemouth, Yeovil Town, and Chesterfield, was swiftly snapped up by Latics boss Micky Mellon, who had made the addition of a striker a priority before the weekend.

With Oldham preparing for their long-awaited return to the Football League, Mellon is keen to ensure his side is as competitive as possible from the outset. The signing of Quigley is seen as a key move to add physical presence and finishing quality to the front line.

Speaking after the deal was confirmed, Quigley expressed his enthusiasm for the move and his belief in the club’s direction under Mellon.

> “As soon as I spoke to the manager I knew this was a club heading in the right direction,” Quigley said.

> “You can sense the ambition here. It’s a massive club with a great fanbase and a real buzz about what’s happening. I wanted to be part of that from the moment we spoke.”

The striker, who made over 50 appearances for Chesterfield in the National League before joining Forest Green in 2023, has proven himself as a hard-working and versatile forward, capable of playing as a lone striker or in a two-man partnership.

Mellon welcomed his latest signing and praised Quigley’s character and experience.

> “Joe is a player who knows what it takes at this level,” said the Oldham manager.

> “He’s physical, brings others into play, and has the kind of attitude we’re looking for. With the season now up and running, it was important to bring someone in who can hit the ground running, and Joe fits the bill.”

Oldham supporters will be hoping Quigley can make an instant impact when the team lines up at Boundary Park on Saturday for their first home fixture of the new season — and their first back in League Two following promotion from the National League.

With optimism building among the Latics faithful, the double signing of Robson and Quigley has added to the sense that Oldham are not just happy to be back in the Football League — they’re here to compete.
