Johannes Hoff Thorup could be perfect boss for 20-year-old star if QPR job awaits: Opinion.
QPR fans eagerly await clarity on their manager’s future ahead of an important summer window.
QPR may undergo significant changes this summer, including a managerial change.
Marti Cifuentes, the Spanish manager, is still on gardening leave because the club lacks a permanent head coach. Cifuentes had been linked to other opportunities following reports of a falling out with R’s CEO Christian Nourry.
Thorup’s appointment could be a great fit for QPR, who are looking to maximise the potential of young players like Rayan Kolli. Opinions on the Dane’s performance at Carrow Road are divided.
QPR is poised for a standout season.
Kolli, an Algerian prospect, had been in and around the first-team at Loftus Road before an eye-catching pre-season last summer. Fans predicted him to be a real breakout star for QPR in the 2024/25 campaign.
Despite an assist against West Brom on the first day, he did not receive as many opportunities as expected.
Kolli made only three more appearances before scoring twice as a substitute in a 3-0 win over Norwich City in December. Over the next five weeks, he assisted in a win over Oxford United, scored in a 2-1 victory over Preston North End, and scored the winning goal against Plymouth Argyle.
Kolli scored and assisted in the 6-2 FA Cup defeat to Leicester City. Unfortunately, a hamstring injury forced him to miss much of the second half of the season, but as the 20-year-old prepares for the 2025/26 season, he has shown what he can do with regular minutes.
One of Thorup’s best features
Thorup’s chances of landing the QPR job remain uncertain. However, if he does, you have to believe his appointment will be ideal for Kolli.
Throughout his managerial career, the Dane has demonstrated a willingness to give minutes to promising young players. Thorup helped develop some promising players at FC Nordsjaelland, and he can do so again with the R’s.
Not only could Kolli thrive in a regular first-team role, but prospects like Kieran Morgan, Emmerson Sutton, and Daniel Bennie should welcome the opportunity to play under his tutelage.
Kolli appears to be a player on track to become a true star, and a top youth developer like Thorup could provide him with the necessary support and opportunities.
