The first squad player to leave Derby County has already done so during the summer transfer window, little over a week after the club’s retained list was made public.
After three years at Pride Park, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing joined MK Dons on Tuesday afternoon. Despite having one year remaining on his East Midlands contract, the winger signed a free move to the League Two team.
Though it doesn’t appear probable that he will be the sole player to switch DE24 for Milton Keynes in the upcoming weeks and months, he has reconnected with Paul Warne, his former Rams manager, who battled in his last months in the Championship.
John Eustace is getting ready for a hectic transfer window. Derby needs new players badly to avoid relegation, but more players will need to leave, and one summer acquisition from the previous season will be battling to remain.
Ben Osborn may struggle to keep his place at Derby County this summer
One of the most intriguing newcomers before the Rams’ return to the Championship was Ben Osborn, who rejoined the team 20 years after departing as a kid.
Just months after playing Premier League football with Sheffield United, the midfielder, who can also play left wing-back, made a respectable start to his career at Pride Park but injuries quickly began to pile up and he found himself out more often than he would have wanted.
His playing career came to an early end when he was sent to the hospital due to a hamstring issue and was unable to play in the season’s last four games as Derby prevailed on the last day.
Osborn’s injury problems will make it difficult for the 30-year-old to maintain his spot with the Rams, and like Mendez-Laing, his time in black and white may end too soon. Eustace has to make changes throughout the team.
Paul Warne will eagerly be watching any movement at Pride Park
More than 20,000 season tickets have been sold since Eustace joined Derby County in February, and performances have significantly improved since then.
But as MK Dons get ready for life in League Two once more, there will be a lot of work to be done once the transfer market opens on June 1. Warne will be closely monitoring some of the players who have previously played under him.
Even though Osborn has played in the Premier League and Championship his whole career, Milton Keynes will be considering him if Eustace decides to let him go since he has an interesting project at Stadium MK.
