Jonathan Hogg to leave Huddersfield Town – These 3 replacements must be on the Terriers’ transfer radar
After finishing a dismal season, Huddersfield Town dropped out of the League One play-off spots and into the
middle of the standings. Since March, Jon Worthington has served as their temporary manager. Jonathan Hogg, the
final member of the squad that was promoted to the Premier League in 2017, is leaving at the end of this season,
marking the end of an era.
Since joining the Terriers in 2013, he has played more than 400 games for the team. He will be leaving a significant
midfield gap as the team looks to make a comeback to the Championship the following season.
With that in mind, we have shifted the focus onto how Huddersfield can replace Hogg, looking into three possible
signings they could target:
Jordan Houghton
Houghton signed a two-year contract with Plymouth Argyle in 2023, and his contract expires at the end of the
current campaign. Houghton talked candidly to the Plymouth Herald earlier this season about “the worst season of
his career” following his extensive absence due to previous manager Wayne Rooney.
Could he be convinced to move from the rolling hills of Devon to the Yorkshire Dales? His replacement, Miron
Muslic, found a spot in the team for him and has made up to 30 appearances this season. However, his contract is
coming to an end and there is no word yet on whether it will be renewed.
Matthew Craig
It’s been a busy season for Matthew Craig. His parent club, Tottenham Hotspur, initially put him on a season-long
loan to Barnsley, but in January, they pulled him back and transferred him to Mansfield Town, where he has also
made few appearances.
Craig, who is 22, is no longer a very young player, and he might be considering leaving the loan carousel in search of
a more permanent position. He is only under contract with Spurs until 2026, so it’s possible that Huddersfield would
benefit from one more year-long loan or a sell at a reasonable price.
Joe Morrell
This one is a bit of a wild card, to the extent that it might even be considered a gamble.Despite continuing to monitor
Joe Morrell’s recovery from a torn cartilage injury that has prevented him from playing all season, Portsmouth
discharged him in the summer of 2024 due to his horrible injury history.
However, Morrell offers a chance for any team willing to take that gamble if he can get that knee back to normal.
After all, this is a seasoned player with years of experience in both League One and the Championship, 37 caps for his
country, and two appearances for Wales in the 2022 World Cup finals. Even with all of this, he is only 28 years old.
These aren’t very expensive replacement options
Transfer fees shouldn’t be a problem because two of the aforementioned will be out of contract in a month or two
and the other is probably available for a loan that lasts a year. However, what about pay? The most recent salary
estimations for these players are as follows:
Player | Wage Estimate |
Jordan Houghton | £4,000 p/wk (Capology) |
Joe Morrell | £4,100 p/wk (Salary Sport) |
Matthew Craig | £2,900 p/wk (Salary Sport) |
Everything must end, but losing Hogg isn’t the only reason Huddersfield is splitting with him. A player who has
played for a club for more than ten years has an incalculable impact, and they will miss him greatly.
However, defensive midfield is becoming a more crucial position in contemporary football. These are the
contemporary utility players, capable of supporting both the offence and the defence. It’s an important position to
get right if Huddersfield wants to do a better job of leaving League One the following season.
