Josh Mulligan medical underway at Rangers as English club beaten to deal.

Rangers are reportedly preparing to sign Dundee midfielder Josh Mulligan.

The 22-year-old has five assists in 34 Scottish Premiership games and is anticipated to be the first signing of the Russell Martin era. Scouts for the Gers have been keeping a close eye on the Scottish star, and he appears to be the first acquisition under the supervision of 49ers Enterprises and Andrew Cavenagh.

Rangers beat Salford City to Mulligan deal

It promises to be a busy summer at Ibrox, with lots of incomings and outgoings expected under the new management. According to Ibrox Noise (11 June), the Light Blues are close to signing the Dens Park star for £1 million, with a physical currently underway. It claims that the Bears beat Salford City to his signature despite the English club offering better pay.

Mulligan deal is a coup for Rangers

Mulligan is one of Scotland’s most promising young players, so signing him would be a huge coup for the Govan club. They have previously missed out on Lewis Ferguson, Aaron Hickey, Lawrence Shankland, and Josh Doig, so it is encouraging to see them finally capturing some of the country’s most promising young talent.

Auchenhowie appears to be focussing on bringing in domestic talent, with Lyall Cameron poised to join as a free agent when his Dundee contract expires. Martin’s side has also been linked with new Scotland sensation Lennon Miller, but they face stiff competition for his services. They signed Aberdeen star Connor Barron as a free agent, and he recently made his debut for the national squad. It’s good to see the Ibrox club returning to its roots with numerous new homegrown players instead of exploring the overseas market. Of course, pulling up gems like Hamza Igamane, Nico Raskin, and Jefte has certainly paid dividends, but the absence of homegrown talents in the squad was a real issue for a long time.

Finally, it seems like the 2020-21 league winners are addressing the problem and bringing back a Scottish core.
