Josh Murphy drops update on his Portsmouth FC future.

Josh Murphy has stated that he is content as a Portsmouth player following his breakthrough season in the Championship at Fratton Park.

Pompey’s acquisition of John Mousinho from Oxford United last summer was seen as a coup among promoted clubs, but it may have been a bigger loss for Oxford than a gain for Pompey.

Murphy’s record in the Championship was not shining. Prior to the 2024/25 season, he had only reached ten combined goals and assists once in his second-tier career, and that was with MK Dons nearly a decade ago.

But, despite any doubts, his electrifying performance in League One to help the U’s win promotion via the play-offs, particularly his brace at Wembley against Bolton Wanderers in the final, only hinted at what the 30-year-old had in store for the season.

Josh Murphy reveals his happiness at Portsmouth.

In his first season with Portsmouth, he scored 21 goals and deserved to be named to the division’s team of the season.

Murphy won the Portsmouth Player of the Season award. His incredible performances quickly endeared him to the fans, and he has expressed his delight to be playing football at Fratton Park.

“I am happy here, I am settled here, there’s a lot going on and the club is building to push for the Premier League – and that aligns with what I want to do,” Murphy told The News, via email.

“I’m happy here, and I want to continue playing at Fratton Park because it’s a special place. It has been fantastic all season; who wouldn’t want to play here?

“Being settled here brings out the best in me.” I am settled here, my family enjoys it here, I have a manager who believes in me and supports me, and the club is moving in the right direction.

“With my performances, this is the base I want to work off going into next season and I believe I can still get better, I believe I can get more goals and assists, so hopefully this is just the benchmark for the future.”

Josh Murphy must stay at Fratton Park to help Portsmouth reach their full potential.

According to The Sun, Hull City, Sunderland, and West Bromwich Albion were among the clubs interested in signing the winger before he signed a three-year contract with Pompey. Given his brilliance this season, it will come as no surprise if later reports emerge of increased interest in him from higher up the division.

Murphy is unlikely to move on this given his contract situation and his professed satisfaction with his current situation. If a team made an irresistible offer for him, it would severely harm Portsmouth’s chances of moving up the league.

They received a significant boost when star striker Colby Bishop returned from heart surgery in November, effectively kicking off the season, but Murphy has done the majority of the heavy lifting, consistently providing throughout the campaign.
