Josh Windass has now shared why he decided to leave Sheffield Wednesday, ‘I wanted to.

Josh Windass has been discussing his Sheffield Wednesday exit this week.

The attacking midfielder was one of the club’s most prolific players across what was a tough 2024/25.

However, amid Sheffield Wednesday’s financial crisis, Josh Windass and Michael Smith terminated their contracts with the Owls earlier this summer.

Windass has reflected on his best Wednesday memory previously, and he’s since found a new club, joining Wrexham on a free for the 2025/26 campaign.

Josh Windass explains Sheffield Wednesday exit

Sheffield Wednesday lost 2-1 to Leicester City on the opening weekend of the campaign.

Windass, meanwhile, scored his first competitive goal for Wrexham when they were beaten by Southampton.

The midfielder has taken up an advanced role in Phil Parkinson’s attack, and speaking ahead of their next game against West Brom this week, he’s now opened up on why he left Sheffield Wednesday.

As per Leader Live, he said: “I loved my five years there and I still love the club now. They did a lot for me and I did a lot for them as well.

“To leave was difficult, especially in the situation that they were in and being one of their main players.

“To leave people at the club who I have a good relationship with was difficult but life is about challenges and I wanted to have a new challenge in this part of my career.”

Josh Windass missed out on impressive Sheffield Wednesday achievement

In 2024/25, the 31-year-old found the back of the net on 13 occasions for the Yorkshire club.

Had he stayed at Hillsborough for another season or two, there’s every chance he could have become one of their all-time top five goalscorers.

5. Mark Bright – 66 goals

4. Redfern Froggatt – 68 goals

3. Lee Chapman – 69 goals

2. David Hirst – 99 goals

1. Johnny Fantham – 142 goals

Windass departed Sheffield Wednesday having scored 53 and provided 23 assists in 182 appearances.
