Josh Windass plays down Sheffield Wednesday exit talk but admits he was close to joining Championship rivals
Sheffield Wednesday are facing a very uncertain few months, and supporters will be keeping a keen eye on any movement in the transfer window this summer.
Danny Rohl’s future at the club remains undecided, despite the German manager taking the Owls to a 12th place finish, after he guided them to survival in the Championship on the final day of the 2023/24 campaign – joining when they were cut adrift in the relegation zone.
Josh Windass responds to Valencia link, it is clear to see Carlos Corberan likes him
Windass’ future at Sheffield Wednesday has been up for debate for the last few months, with it emerging in January that Brazilian club Santos were showing a keen interest in the versatile forward, as per Ben Jacobs.

While a move never came to fruition, those links to a move abroad have not died down. A report from Spanish outlet El Desmarque has stated that Valencia are the latest club to have targeted the 31-year-old, but a move does not look all too likely for one reason.
Speaking on the Open Goal podcast, the former Wigan Athletic player has played down the rumours linking him to La Liga.
He said: “I don’t know anything about that to be honest.
“That’ll be because of Carlos [Corberan]. I was close to going to West Brom last summer because I was a free transfer and I was close to going to West Brom and ended up staying at Sheffield Wednesday.”
Josh Windass could have been playing his football for West Brom
While the ambition of playing for a European club may be high up on Windass’ list before he retires, his Sheffield Wednesday career could have come to an end even earlier.
According to Birmingham World, West Bromwich Albion battled against Birmingham City for the signature of Wednesday’s top scorer last summer. However, he signed a new one-year deal at Hillsborough, and Carlos Corberan was forced to miss out.
