Justin Thomas reveals Rangers takeover surprise as Ryder Cup star with 49ers insight admits ‘I should’ve known that’
The golfer has acknowledged that he was unaware of the 49ers’ takeover at Rangers, but he still hopes to visit Leeds
when they return to the English Premier League.
When the American team arrived to take control of the situation at Elland Road, Thomas and his countryman Jordan
Spieth became involved.
The USA Ryder Cup star acknowledges that Sheffield United supporter Matt Fitzpatrick made fun of him lately for
attending a game when they were promoted to return to England. Thomas, however, was forthright when he
acknowledged that he was unaware of the 49ers’ recent takeover of the Rangers.
When initially quizzed about any involvement, he said: “With Leeds United, yeah.”
The enquiry was then clarified as it was pointed out the group had also taken charge at Ibrox, to which Thomas
replied: “They have? No, I didn’t see, that’s awesome. It’s all very cool. I’m still learning. I’m definitely not going to
act like I’m an expert [on football] by any means. I played with Fitzpatrick.

going to try to go to a [Leeds] game? I was like: Yeah, I’d love to. They were like: Oh, of course you are now they’re in
the Premier League! So they were giving me a hard time! But, no, it’s been cool to be a part of.”
Thomas was then asked if he had been aware of the Rangers takeover and responded: “No, I didn’t. I was not. I’m
sure I should have known that and whatnot, but no, I didn’t see.”
Given their connection to Leeds, it was obvious that there was a widespread outside belief that Thomas and Spieth
may later also have some sort of influence with the 49ers’ presence at Rangers. Thomas responded to that by saying,
“I simply don’t know enough to probably give you enough information on it.”
It’s not like if you work for a venture capital firm, for example, and you say, ‘Hey, I want to go with this firm that’s
putting in all of these different things. I’m not necessarily a member of the 49ers group, you know. Leeds United, of
which I am a member, is affiliated with the 49ers.
In total, there are now six Scottish top-flight clubs owned by Americans. On why there may be an attraction, he said:
“You’re asking the wrong guy. I’m not sure. I’m sure like the rest or everybody else, they’re seeing the opportunity
and the interest, you know, globally. So that’s my guess.”
Although Thomas freely acknowledges that he is not a specialist in football, he is well-versed on the Genesis Scottish
Open and the essential work that may be done in preparation for next week’s match at Royal Portrush. “It is
enormous,” he stated. I’m not aware of the exact statistics, but I’m fairly certain that a good number of Open
champions had played the Scottish the week before. I believe it has greatly benefited me. Many small things are
beyond your ability to replicate for us at home.
“I think this is a different get-up in terms of the captain and vice-captains, but I think it’s a new wave and all of us are
excited. It’s huge. I think nobody can relate or understand everything that he went through, but he’s fought hard and
it’s awesome to see him back and playing some good golf.”
“I have a lot of golf between now and then, so, obviously, I’m excited for the opportunity to get to play on the team,”
Thomas concluded, indicating that he will probably be on the team at Bethpage. In order to avoid having to worry
about a choice, I only want to get that team on points in the remaining golf matches. I’m currently focused on playing
for the FedExCup, a major championship, and some major events. When the Ryder Cup time comes, we’ll
concentrate on that.
