Wigan Athletic can confirm that young midfielder Kai Payne has completed a season-long loan move to Sky Bet League Two side Oldham Athletic.
Payne will aim to gain valuable EFL experience whilst on loan at Boundary Park after Oldham’s recent promotion to the fourth tier of English football.
Kai spent his younger days with Premier League side Liverpool and was one of the most sought-after youngsters in the country as a U9. He later arrived at the Brick Community Stadium in November 2018, signing a contract as a U14 player following a successful trial period.
A combative midfielder who boasts an excellent range of passing, Payne helped Latics U18s lift the LFA Professional Youth Cup in his first year as a scholar before establishing himself as a regular in the U21s in the 2022/23 campaign.
The 20-year-old made his professional debut in an EFL Trophy fixture at Tranmere Rovers in November 2023 and regularly trained with the first team before he went on to make his Sky Bet League One debut against Crawley Town last season.
Kai is no stranger to his surroundings at Boundary Park after spending a period on loan there during the 2024/25 season before returning to Latics in November. He will now head back to Oldham on a season-long loan, aiming to gain valuable, regular EFL experience.
