Key influence in Portsmouth Championship survival now with glory in sights after Fratton exit and Newcastle United return.

The statistics highlight his importance to Championship survival; the former Arsenal, Norwich, and QPR player is now eyeing World Cup and international success with Reggae Boyz this summer. He played an important role in Pompey’s Championship survival mission. Following his departure from Fratton Park, Isaac Hayden is utilising his experience there as a springboard for a summer cutlery tilt.
World Cup, Concacaf Gold Cup & Jamaica
That comes as the Newcastle United midfielder’s World Cup bid draws closer, in what is shaping up to be a busy summer of football. Hayden comes into that era off the tail of a good loan spell at Fratton Park, after joining from St James’ Park in January. The 30-year-old made it obvious that his time at Fratton Park was mostly about preparing for a slew of international action with Jamaica, having pledged his allegiance to the Reggae Boyz at the conclusion of last year. Hayden has appeared in three matches to date, guiding Steve McLaren’s side to a Unity Cup victory over Trinidad and Tobago, before a penalty shootout defeat to Nigeria in the final where the former Norwich City man was successful from 12 yards.
Then came following a big 3-0 World Cup qualifying success over Guatemala in the early hours of Wednesday morning, as Jamaica advanced to the third round of qualifying as Concacaf Group E leaders.

To guarantee a spot in next year’s North American championships, they must now finish first in one of three tables. Hayden’s action does not end there, with the Gold Cup coming up next, followed by competition in the United States and Canada on Saturday. Jamaica’s participation begins with a rematch against Guatemala, along with Guadeloupe and Panama. Hayden might play in up to six matches if his squad advances to the competition’s final on July 6.
Newcastle man’s Pompey survival influence underlined
His £50,000-per-week earnings with the Magpies ensured that a permanent Pompey agreement was never on the cards, but his appearance record demonstrated how his influence developed at PO4. Pompey won seven, drew two, and lost three of his 12 starts, and he was substituted for five games in a row, which coincided with four defeats for John Mousinho’s team. Hayden talked candidly to The News last month about the circumstances surrounding his Fratton stay, emphasising its significance for his international aspirations. He stated, ‘When I first arrived at the club, it was a “you help me, I’ll help you” situation. I don’t think there is anything more to it.
