Key Newcastle United development emerges in Chelsea, Man United transfer battle for Ipswich Town player.

Newcastle United are in showdown talks with Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap, hoping to persuade him to move to St James’ Park ahead of Manchester United, Chelsea, and Everton in the upcoming transfer window.
The Tractor Boys’ first top-flight campaign in 22 years was unsuccessful, as they were relegated to the second-tier following a defeat to Newcastle last month. They still have four games to play.
After his impressive individual performances this season, star striker Delap’s future appears to be away from Portman Road. He is a wanted man this summer as a result of his impressive form, and Newcastle are hoping to get ahead of their transfer rivals after key talks between the 22-year-old, his representatives, and Magpies manager Eddie Howe.
Newcastle hold crucial Liam Delap transfer talks amidst Premier League rival interest.
Few football players face such a significant decision about their future at such a young age as Delap this summer, and he will have to choose his next destination carefully, as it could well dictate his career for years to come in either a positive or negative way.
He has been highly-rated from his time at Manchester City, and while Newcastle is an attractive option, his openness to a St James’ Park move will likely be dictated by the amount of game-time he believes he will get next season if Alexander Isak remains at the club.
| 2024/25 Premier League statistics: Liam Delap vs Alexander Isak | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Player | Appearances | Starts | Goals | Assists |
| Liam Delap | 35 | 32 | 12 | 2 |
| Alexander Isak | 34 | 34 | 23 | 6 |
Isak is one of the best strikers in the Premier League, and he may be on the move this summer as he looks to take the next step in his career by joining a title-chasing side in England or abroad, but the Magpies’ Champions League qualification means he will most likely stay for at least another year.
In fact, The Athletic journalist David Ornstein revealed before their top-five finish was confirmed that the Swedish international would be “going nowhere” if they secured a place in Europe’s premier club competition, implying that Delap would play second fiddle if he joined Newcastle anytime soon.
A move to Chelsea, Manchester United, or Everton could provide the 22-year-old with a better chance of becoming a first-choice Premier League striker, which is his top priority at this stage of his career.
The Magpies may not be able to persuade Delap to make a move, and he could end up with one of the aforementioned trio next season.
