Kieran Egan Jailed After One-Punch Death at Chichester Pub
A man has been jailed for killing a father-of-two with a single punch during a confrontation at a pub in Chichester. Kieran Egan, 30, was sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter in connection with the death of 51-year-old Andrew Turner.
The tragic incident occurred on the evening of October 14, 2023, at The Royal Oak pub in Chichester, West Sussex. According to eyewitnesses and CCTV footage, an altercation broke out between Egan and Turner, reportedly sparked by a verbal disagreement that quickly escalated. Egan struck Turner once in the face, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head on the pavement.
Emergency services were called immediately, and Turner was rushed to hospital with a serious head injury. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, he died two days later as a result of a traumatic brain injury. A post-mortem confirmed that the fatal blow led to the injury that caused his death.
Egan, of no fixed address, was arrested at the scene and later charged with manslaughter. During court proceedings at Lewes Crown Court, he expressed remorse for his actions, but the judge made clear that the consequences of his violent behaviour were devastating.
Judge Christine Laing KC said during sentencing: “This was a senseless act of violence that took the life of a loving father and partner. A single punch, thrown in anger and without regard for the consequences, has shattered a family.”
Turner, a well-known local figure and father of two adult children, was described by friends and family as “kind, loyal, and full of life.” In a moving victim impact statement, his daughter said: “My father was our rock. The hole left in our lives cannot be filled. He was taken from us in a moment that should never have happened.”
The case has reignited public discussion about the dangers of one-punch assaults, which have led to numerous deaths across the UK in recent years. Campaigners and local leaders are calling for greater awareness and education around the consequences of spontaneous violence, especially in nightlife settings.
Detective Chief Inspector Emma Vickers, who led the investigation for Sussex Police, said: “This tragic case is a stark reminder that a single moment of violence can have irreversible consequences. Kieran Egan’s actions were completely disproportionate and ultimately fatal. We hope this sentence brings some small comfort to Mr Turner’s family.”
She added that Sussex Police would continue to work with local establishments to prevent alcohol-related violence and promote safer environments.
Egan will serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before being considered for release on licence. The case stands as another sobering reminder of how quickly a night out can turn into a life-altering tragedy.
Turner’s family is now urging others to “think before they act” and remember that “one punch can kill.” A memorial fundraiser has since been set up in his honour, with proceeds going to charities that support families affected by sudden loss due to violence.
