Following Kwame Poku’s transfer to Championship team Queens Park Rangers, Chelsea United is expected to reap financial rewards.
For an undisclosed sum, the 23-year-old left League One team Peterborough United to join QPR. Additionally, Colchester is expected to get a portion of the money the League One team makes from Poku’s exit because they made sure sell-on clauses were included in the
“substantial six-figure fee”—estimated to be about £250,000—that Posh paid them for the winger back in 2021.
“I am thrilled that Kwame has chosen to join a club where the football team has secured a substantial transfer fee and a fantastic sell-on clause to continue sharing financially in his success in reaching the top,” stated Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony.
We hope the future holds nothing but the best for Kwame and his family. After turning down multiple teams to join QPR, Poku finds his move into the Championship to be exciting.
“I feel like the project they’re building here excites me and I want to be part of taking QPR to that next level,” Poku said on the QPR website. “I think the club is in exciting times, and there are some good players here.”
Poku will play at Loftus Road for Julien Stéphan, the new head coach of QPR. Poku, who has made over 220 professional app appearances, stated, “When I was talking to him, he was talking about where he sees me fitting in and where he thinks I can influence the game.”
That is what drew my attention the most. I want to create an impression right away because I’m not quite young anymore—I’m 23 turning 24.
Poku initially joined Colchester’s academy and stayed with them for two years, from 2019 to 2021. Before leaving the U’s to join Peterborough, he played 75 games for them and scored six goals.
Poku believes that his four years with Posh and his experience at the U’s were crucial to his growth. “I believe it was a necessary journey to bring me to this point at this time,” he stated.
Being resilient and aiming to be in a situation where I can just show off my talent every day while being the greatest version of myself were the main goals.
