Sunderland’s majority owner responded to the club’s promotion on Instagram the day after the game.

Sunderland co-owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus marked the club’s emotional return to the Premier League with a heartfelt Instagram post honouring his late father, Robert Louis-Dreyfus.

Just hours after Sunderland’s dramatic 2-1 win over Sheffield United in the Championship play-off final at Wembley Stadium, Louis-Dreyfus shared a powerful black-and-white photo of his father wearing an Olympique de Marseille shirt and standing pitchside at the French club he once owned. The caption for the photo read: “Premier League.” This one is for you. Your passion for the game lives on. “We miss you.” Kyril Louis-Dreyfus posted a picture of his father to the Sunderland owner’s Instagram account on Sunday afternoon, following the win at Wembley the day before.

Robert Louis-Dreyfus was Marseille’s majority owner from 1996 to 2009, and he helped rebuild the club during a difficult time. Kyril Louis-Dreyfus became Sunderland’s majority shareholder in 2022, at the age of 23, and has since overseen a period of transformation at the Stadium of Light, working with the club’s leadership to reshape the club’s infrastructure and identity. Under head coach Régis Le Bris, the Black Cats defied expectations with one of the youngest squads in Championship history, culminating in a fairytale finish at Wembley.

What Régis Le Bris said about Sunderland’s stunning win.

Tommy Watson, a teenager, etched his name into Sunderland folklore with a dramatic 95th-minute goal at Wembley Stadium, securing promotion to the Premier League and breaking Sheffield United’s hearts in the Championship play-off final.

The 19-year-old, who will join Brighton & Hove Albion this summer, produced a moment of magic late on, cutting inside and curling a precise low strike past Michael Cooper to cap an unforgettable comeback and return the Black Cats to the top flight for the first time since 2018. It was a stunning finish to a game in which Sunderland had struggled to establish themselves for long stretches, but Watson’s late heroics turned the tide and sparked wild celebrations among the Red and White faithful.

“It’s a fantastic scenario for us, again,” Le Bris said. “Like the semi-final, it was absolutely fantastic. It must have been difficult for the coaches and fans, but we once again demonstrated strong character. Even when we were not dominant, when we struggled as a team, we remained connected and adhered to our strategy. Then, later in the game, you believe you can change the momentum. This was the situation today.

“We lost Luke early and had to make a substitution. At the same time, I felt comfortable making this substitution because we knew Meps was prepared. This season, he has been extremely impressive not only as a player, but also as a person and professional. When he left the team before the semi-finals, he told me, ‘I will stay connected with the group, don’t worry. He demonstrated today that this behaviour was extremely important to the squad. We switched him with Ballard because they were targeting this side with Kieffer Moore, so we were successful.”
