Large Fire Erupts at Old Sarum Airfield: Emergency Services Respond to Explosions and Smoke
Emergency services rushed to Old Sarum Airfield near Salisbury on Monday after a major fire broke out, sending thick plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky and causing significant damage to one of the historic site’s hangars.
The fire, which broke out in the early afternoon, appears to have centred on Hangar 3 — a large structure that has now mostly collapsed. Witnesses described hearing a series of loud explosions as flames engulfed the building, fuelling concern and speculation about what may have been stored inside.
Fire crews from across Wiltshire were dispatched to the scene, along with police and ambulance units, as the scale of the incident became clear. Dozens of emergency personnel worked to contain the blaze, using high-powered hoses and aerial ladders in an attempt to prevent the fire from spreading to other nearby structures.
The black smoke rising from the hangar could be seen from miles around, with some local residents reporting the sight as far away as Amesbury and parts of Salisbury. Roads in the area were quickly closed off by police to allow emergency services full access and to protect the public from potential hazards.
As of Monday evening, the fire had been brought under control but not yet fully extinguished. Fire crews remained on site to dampen hot spots and assess structural safety. A cordon remained in place around the airfield, with the public urged to stay away.
The cause of the fire is not yet known. However, given the reported explosions, a joint investigation has been launched by fire and police services to determine whether flammable materials or fuels stored inside the hangar may have contributed to the severity of the blaze.
A spokesperson for Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said:
“We were called to reports of a large fire at Old Sarum Airfield just after 2pm. Multiple appliances were sent to the scene, and crews worked to contain the fire and protect surrounding areas. At this time, the fire has been largely contained but significant damage has occurred to the structure.”
There have been no confirmed reports of injuries, though paramedics remained on standby throughout the response. It is understood that Hangar 3, used primarily for aircraft storage and maintenance, was largely unoccupied at the time the fire broke out.
Old Sarum Airfield is a site of historic aviation importance, dating back to World War I. Several buildings on the airfield, including hangars, are considered of architectural and historical significance. The full extent of the damage to Hangar 3, and any potential loss of heritage or aircraft, has yet to be assessed.
Local councillor Denise Harper expressed concern over the impact of the fire:
“This is a devastating event for the community and for all those connected to Old Sarum Airfield. We’re incredibly grateful to the emergency services for their rapid and professional response.”
The public is advised to avoid the area until further notice. Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the early stages of the fire is urged to contact Wiltshire Police.
