Latest on Striker James Norwood’s Oldham Athletic Future

Striker James Norwood, one of the standout figures in Oldham Athletic’s recent promotion-winning campaign, has reached the end of his contract at Boundary Park – and as things stand, no new deal has been offered.

The 33-year-old forward played a key role in Latics’ resurgence last season, contributing vital goals and experience as Micky Mellon’s side sealed promotion. But despite his on-field impact and popularity with supporters, Norwood’s future remains uncertain heading into the summer.

It is understood that, as of July 1st, the veteran striker is officially out of contract. While the club has moved swiftly to secure several players ahead of the new campaign, including the recent signing of Josh Hawkes from Tranmere, talks with Norwood have yet to materialise.

Sources close to the club suggest that manager Micky Mellon and the board are still deliberating over the composition of their forward line, with recruitment priorities likely to shape whether Norwood is retained.

The lack of clarity around his future is surprising given the striker’s influence. Norwood netted 12 goals across all competitions last season, many of them in crucial matches, including a dramatic late winner against Chesterfield and a double away at Altrincham. His physicality, leadership, and ability to produce in high-pressure moments made him a fan favourite in quick time.

Speaking after the play-off final win at Wembley, Norwood had hinted he was open to extending his stay. “I’ve loved every minute at this club,” he said. “It’s been a special year. I’ve felt the love from the fans and I’d love to keep helping this club go forward.”

However, the club’s silence on his situation has sparked growing speculation among supporters on social media, many urging the Latics hierarchy to act swiftly and offer the striker a new deal.

One fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter): *“We can’t go into League Two without Norwood – he’s exactly the kind of player we need to battle and grind out results.”* Another said: *“Letting Norwood walk would be a huge mistake. He was the heartbeat of our attack.”*

Oldham’s sporting director Steve Thompson has yet to comment publicly on Norwood’s future, though it’s believed the club is actively monitoring attacking options in the transfer market. With the new League Two season fast approaching, a resolution is expected in the coming weeks.

For now, Norwood is weighing up his options as he remains a free agent. Whether that path leads back to Boundary Park or elsewhere remains to be seen – but after a memorable campaign in blue and white, many at Oldham will be hoping it’s not the end of his Latics story.
