Lawrence Shankland reacts as Rangers formalise transfer after contract expires

Lawrence Shankland reacts as Rangers formalise transfer after contract expires.

Lawrence Shankland has been linked with a transfer to the Rangers for what seems like an eternity.

Shankland, 29, did not have the most prolific season in front of goal last time around, but he still scored 68 goals in 137 games for Hearts. The Scotland centre-forward is currently looking for a new club, and he has been linked with a move to Rangers several times. However, with West Brom and Saudi Arabia allegedly interested in signing Shankland this summer, a move from Russell Martin’s side may prove difficult.

Rangers were interested in recruiting Shankland while he was at Dundee United, according to reports from 2020. He left Tannadice in 2021 to join Beerschot in Belgium, where he spent a year before being signed by Hearts on a three-year contract, which has now ended.

Rangers can now take advantage of his contract expiring by signing him for free. However, Ibrox executives have already taken advantage of the pre-contract market to sign Lyall Cameron after his Dundee contract ended.

Cameron’s move from Dens Park to Ibrox was confirmed on Tuesday (17 June), with the Govan club welcoming him on their Instagram account. Shankland is looking for a new club, but he took the time to respond to the post and like it. Jack Butland, Charlie Adam, Alan Hutton, and Glen Kamara, all former Light Blues players, liked the post, which showed Cameron donning the new 2025/26 home kit for the first time.

Rangers should still sign Shankland

It’s surprising that Rangers never signed Shankland. Since coming onto the Ibrox radar in 2020, the Glasgow-born striker has scored nine goals for Dundee United, eight for Beerschot, and 68 for Hearts. Every Gers fan and their dog is aware of Cyriel Dessers’ struggles in front of goal, so it’s strange that when Alfredo Morelos went off the boil and eventually departed Ibrox, there was no concerted effort to liberate Shankland from his contract at Tynecastle. He will turn 30 in August, and while he had a quieter season in front of goal, it was mostly due to him being used in a different capacity at Hearts.

Still, he managed to notch nine goals and supply 11 assists in 43 total appearances last term.
