Leeds Rhinos make decision on Kallum Watkins contract as future update provided

Kallum Watkins looks set to remain a Leeds Rhinos player in 2026 with Brad Arthur admitting a new contract will be sorted ‘sooner rather than later’.

Watkins has had a significant impression for the Rhinos since joining on an initial deal until the end of the season from Salford Red Devils.
He has played a big role in the Rhinos’ recent form turnaround, with Brad Arthur’s team being unbeaten in May and advancing to third in the league ahead of Saturday’s game against Warrington.

Watkins’ short-term contract expires in a few months, but Arthur said on Friday morning that he expects an announcement shortly on an extension beyond 2026, with sporting director Ian Blease in talks with the player.

“Bleasey is working through that,” Arthur revealed.

“All the indications are we want him to stay and Kallum wants to stay so I’m sure that’ll get sorted sooner rather than later.”

Watkins will make his 400th career appearance on Saturday evening and does not appear to be slowing down.

Arthur, who has filled in for a variety of positions for Leeds since his return to the club, expressed his satisfaction with the veteran’s performance.

He described Watkins’ adaptability as “a luxury.” “He’s just a football player; you can place him anywhere and he’ll perform his job.

“What pleases me the most is his approach about it. He’s moved to the middle, the edge, the halves, and has done everything is necessary to aid the squad.”
